LR2 to CS3 function not working

I want to open files from LR2 into CS3 and use ctrl+E; CS3 opens but the file does not appear not matter how long I wait. Going back to LR2 I get this dialogue box

"The file could not be edited becauses Adobe CS3 could not be launched."

This is a huge problem if there is no intergration possible between the programs!

Any suggestions?

I have just tried this with a TIF, JPG and NEF files and it works for me.
If they are RAW files have you upgrade ACR in CS3 to v4.5?
In CS3 goto Help/Updates...

Just a thought.

I have the same issue. I have CS3, ACR v4.5. When selecting edit in CS3, CS3 opens but no image ever shows up. I do not get the 'could not be edited' dialog box.
What's up??

This "The file could not be edited because Adobe CS3 could not be launched" is a very rare bug. It has affected my Windows machine throughout the beta process, even after wiping the Preferences file, and it has only just been fixed by following the method below.

Because it's so odd a bug, it would help Adobe if you could save a copy of your Preferences file before doing this, and save another copy afterwards if it works.

OK, go into Lightroom's Preferences for the External Editor and change the Photoshop setting so it sends 8 bit files. Click OK. Now change them so it sends 16 bit files. Then try to send a file to Photoshop. That worked for me.

@bshamilton - what version of Photoshop? 1'.'.1 is required.

Yes I have 1'.'.1, with the patcher app.
I have found that I can get it to open in CS3, if I choose the edit with photoshop.exe.
So, apparently, the complete integration still has a few(!!!) bugs to get worked out.

I have exactly the same problem. ACR 4.5. Photoshop 1'.'.1. Lightroom preferences not altered from new. (The 8 bit trick does not work).

I did some tests to pin it down for you.

I added Photoshop.exe as the other editor (ignoring the warning message). I can now edit files using Photo/Edit in/Photoshop.exe and that is a workaround that works.

I tried changing the settings for the built-in to the defaults for another editor. In fact I tried all possible settings. It never works.

I tried changing the settings for the other editor to match the built-in defaults, i.e. TIFF, ProPhotoRGB, 16 bit, No compression, and it always still works.

That shows that the settings are nothing to do with it.

Note that what exactly happens when it goes wrong is that it successfully launches Photoshop if it isn't already running, then there is a long wait, then the error message - probably a time-out in the code. So why would it time out if you use the built-in option, and work perfectly if you use the other editor option, even with the same settings? That is a clue.

I hope this all helps you solve the bug, and at least I've given you a workaround.

(XP SP3, 2GB memory, Pentium 4 3GHz, plenty of disk space)

I also just tried it with a JPG instead of a RAW - it fails in the same way.

What worked for me was recreating a new catalogue and reimporting photos into the new catalogue.

I followed a link from another thread here that had a link to a discussion in an Adobe forum about this problem. It was suggested that some users have only achieved partial upgrade of Photoshop to 1'.'.1. I followed the suggestion of downloading the 1'.'.1 upgrade file from the Adobe site, then rebooting the machine immediately before running it. The upgrade worked and Photoshop is still working - Good news!

The Bad news is that this made no difference at all to the original problem!

Creating a new catalog etc made no difference to me. It was a new installation with a new catalog in the default location anyway.

I'm sure Adobe must be able to solve this.

The trick does not work. Please read my message no. 7 above where I have documented in detail how I have tried a variety of things to help you pin down what is wrong.

I can always run Photoshop with any settings if set up as another editor. I can never run it, regardless of settings, in the standard way (Ctrl+E).
