LR2 on a Netbook

I got an HP2133 to use when I travel. My desktop is down--fried motherboard--so the little netbook is my only computer right now. I have LR2.3 installed and tonight I downloaded 45 photos. I was pleasantly surprised. It is painfully slow but if I have the time it usable. The two slowest actions are rendering the photo for editing and exporting. It says "loading" for a long time. Fortunately, I can start editing before it's done loading. It exports a photo in a little over a minute so 45 photos are pushing an hour. But, it's stil usable. I was surprised with both LR2.3 and the netbook.

I have a Samsung NC1' and have toyed witht he idea of loading LR. But for now, I am considering an installation of my front-end tools - Fast Stone Image Viewer and ImageIngester. I will not be able to import or edit w/LR, but I can handle quick browsing, renaming, and DNG conversion if I want to prepare my files for importation later.

I have a 2133 as well.. so far I haven't dared install LR.. it would be a tease. When on the road, I take a different approach to my post work.. I don't do any. On a multi-day shoot, I will opt for RAW + Jpg so I have the jpg for preview purposes, but the RAW files take forever to open.

I did install Elements, but so far haven't used it. I use ImageIngester Pro to ingest images to the HD and back up to an external at the same time. Then use FastStone Image Viewer to preview the jpg files just so I can determine if I need to make any adjustments for the next days shoot.

Glad to hear it works, but like I said, it would be a tease for me...

I believe that FastStone will read the embedded JPEG image in the RAW file, so you may not need to shoot RAW+JPEG (unelss you have other uses for the JPEG file). It works for me with my D3''.

I use LR2 on an aging Powerbook G4 which has a 1.33GHz G4 processor and 2GB of RAM. It runs okay for my D8' RAW files but I have done the occasional panoramic stitch. Those are running in the 5'-8'MP range and as 16-bit TIFFs are about 3''MB each. I have one in particular with a lot of localized edits, and exporting that for printing or web viewing takes a loooooong time. I mean like 3'+ minutes to export. Even re-rendering the library view after making a change takes like 2' minutes.

But surprisingly if you wait around it gets the job done. And working with the photo in the develop module goes pretty smoothly once the image is loaded. Methinks it's time to think about getting some new hardware, just have to get my wallet to agree with me.

Is there a specific preference setting to open just the jpeg? It takes for ever to open the RAw files so I may not be targeting the jpeg

I only shoot RAW so I cannot answer about the program preferences. And, I believe that when you are "viewing a RAW file" in FSIV, you are actually looking at the embedded JPEG within the RAW file. I do not find the program to be that slow with D3'' files, but it does take a few seconds when the program first reads a folder with images. But, once the fodler is read, I find viewing to be reasonably quick.
