When an exclamination point shows in the top right corner of a LR2 thumbnail, we are being told the metadata in the LR2 database (.lrcat) does not match the metadata in the master record (.psd, .tif, etc.) in the shoot folder.

If we click the !, a dialog box asks if we want to overwrite from the master record (.psd, .tif, etc) to the LR2 database or vice versa.
(as an aside, this dialog box needs terminology/instructions with more clarity)

If we tell it to overwrite the master record from the LR2 database, it doesn't do it.

I've checked File > Catalog Settings > Metadata and these are settings:
Unchecked - Include Develop settings in Metadata in .jpg etc
Checked - Auto write changes into XMP

Is this a bug or is there some other setting/preference that further controls this operation?

Chris, What you're doing should work as you describe. There are reports that there is some 'goofiness' going on involving metadata in/out/update in LR2. At this point, I don't have much else to add. If there's a work-around to force the write (or read) I'm not aware of it, perhaps another member will know.

Just as an FYI (and without pedantic intent), I'd add that a more standard LR terminology would refer to the 'master record' as the 'image file'. As much of the LR documented nomenclature is somewhat hidden/remote from the users, many folks are at a loss as to what 'stuff' is actually called/named in LR.

Aside: I'll be down your way in a month or so for a long weekend of golf. We stay at The Breakers, on the beach (owner is a friend of one of our group) and play several courses around the area. Joke: I told the gang that we had spent so much time in VB, I just went ahead and memorized the Zip Code. It was a struggle: 23456 :)

Brad,

Thanks. I'm okay with whatever data fields are called. I can learn them so long as the naming conventions are logical.

I hope to see explicit choices in the dialog checkboxes such as:
(x) LR Cat metadata overwrite image file metadata
(x) Image File metadata overwrite LR Cat metadata

Right now they are somewhat vague.

When you're in VaBch playing golf, I'll be in Palau and Yap (Micronesia; near Guam) shooting mermaids for a book I'm working on. Enjoy VaBch, it should be a perfect time of year.

Chris
