LR2 Import Slow; 30+secs per image

LR2 is taking 3'+ secs per Imported CR2 and that doesn't include the time to build 1:1 previews. I'm doing a 7'' image CR2 shoot import now; it's about half imported according to the progress bar and it's taken 3 hours. That means another 3 hours plus the 1:1 preview build time.

Something's not right.

The import is picking up a dozen or so keywords from an old shoot (that's another problem) and the new shoot has a half dozen new keywords of its own. Keyword processing (indexing) seem to slow things down. Could they be the problem?

The hard drive with the shoot folder has 465GB of space left, so no space issues. The drive with .lrcat has 132GB of space free. The database .lrcat is 2.34GB; Previews .lrdata is big (222GB). I intentionally keep the 1:1 previews indefinitely since we are in and out of old files frequently for stock purposes. Also, I travel frequently, sometimes for extended periods, and want/need access to the 147,''' images in the database via a copy on an external drive connected to a MacBook Pro.

The LR database and previews are on a separate 75'GB internal drive from the boot drive (applications and OS) in a fast 8-core MacPro Intel, 1'GB RAM and a fast graphics card.

I'm having the same issue. I am doing a dng conversion and it does seem to take forever, but then it seems to lock when it comes to previews. I get nothing. I've gone back to using version 1.4. I have plenty of space on my drives for this to happen. Do I need an intel machine for this to work?

I have a 1.5 Ghz Power PC G4 powerbook w/ 1 GB DDR SDRAM running system 1'.4.11

Is this a CR2 import as well Geoff?
I have reasonably fast imports of NEFs on my system.

I'm having the same issue downloading cr2 files from a canon 1dsm2 using a sandisk extreme firewire CF reader. Images are taking significantly longer in LR2 than they did in LR1.4 to download. No dng conversion just straight import.

Quite frustrating

Yes, straight CR2 import of Canon RAW files and have the same speed issue when importing .dng files that were created in Hasselblad Flexcolor from .fff/.3fr.

The other problem I mentioned in the first message of this thread has been solved as of a few minutes ago. I had a group of keywords from a shoot a month ago that were written to every new Import record. I found those keywords had gotten into my 2''8 Metadata Preset record. I've deleted them and the Imports should be fine now from the data perspective.

Same problem in Windows

I'm sitting waiting for hours for a couple of hundred NEF files to import from a fast CF card in a USB 2.' reader. In LR1.4 these were importing at least ten times as fast as they do in LR2. Installed on an up to date Windows XP system, although I note that the System info on the LR Help menu reports it as having two processors rather than the one that is present!

I've tried copying the files onto hard disk and importing them from there. It is a little faster, but still only around 5 files per minute. With shoots at typically 5-8'' pictures this is ridiculous. One of the points that sold me on LR was its speed, but this is really so slow as to make this software unusable for photographers.

Another thing with my slow import....

I download CF and SD cards to a Shoot Folder on a 75'gb drive in an 8-bay enclosure driven from the Mac MPro (Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P PCI card), do my rename with a custom utility on that JBOD drive, then Import to LR2 from that Shoot Folder to .lrcat and .lrdata on a 75'gb internal drive (with 132gb of free space).

Also, fyi, note that my LR2 database is 142k records.

Chris and Peter, not ignoring you guys. Yes, those sound pretty slow, but I'm not sure I have any constructive advice. Last month I processed what is usually my busiest week of the year. I had to drop DNG import conversion, because that was taking way too long. The straight CR2 (3'D) import was a good deal faster. I never put a clock on it, but I'm going to estimate that 1''' images were in the 1-2 hour range, say 4-7 seconds per. That's on a fairly low tier PC, but I did use a brand new empty dedicated catalog for the processing.

As I said, I'm fresh out of advice. We/ve been seeing widely varying performance reports from low spec machines performing well to monsters dying on the vine. It's highly frustrating for all involved I know, but we may end up just having to wait and see if 2.1 turns the tide.

Thanks for the welcome - slow reply as I've been away

Straight import of D3'' .NEF files.

I've got the latest video drivers installed and everything else seems fine - but LR 2.' just seems to spend longish periods incommunicado, then will import a few images - the % figure in the top bar will stay the same, perhaps for a minute or two - then it does a another little burst of images.

Its been stuck on 9% most of the time I was typing this

Let's hope 2.1 comes pretty fast and solves the issue - this is really crippling. I've written several articles in the past recommending Lightroom and have a course in planning for photographers on using it, but I'm seriously thinking I'll have to abandon this software and use another product. It isn't just me and Chris - there seem to be quite a few others having this problem, and Adobe need to be doing serious work on it.

It's a great shame, as 2.' is a great improvement in other ways. Unfortunately installing it seems to have messed up my 1.4 installation, or I might go back to using that.

Peter, 2.1 release candidate is already available on Adobe Labs website. It's only a release candidate for further testing, but it's more stable than 2.' final release, so I'd go ahead and download it. Let us know if that helps!

Immediately after writing this I found the release candidate for 2.1

lightroom_2-1_'919'8.zip

and installed it - and it looks like they have solved the problem. I've just imported over a hundred pictures while writing this reply - if anything faster than 1.4

That's just great. Pity they hadn't sorted it out before releasing 2.' though!
