LR2 Edit in Photoshop requires import?

I have a directory of NEF files. When I select Edit in Photoshop, Photoshop opens the NEF file and allows me to edit it. If I close the image, Photoshop saves the file as a .PSD file with -edit added to the file name. So I start with abc.nef and Photoshop saves the modified file as abc-edit.psd. That's fine.

However, the new abc-edit.PSD file is not shown in LR. I have to synchronize the folder to see the file. That doesn't seem right to me.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

You shouldn't have to synchronize in order to see the edited file.

Lets assume you don't have a bug and I will ask you to confirm:
1. you do not have any filters activated which would prevent the file from showing
2. you do not have stacks collapsed which may also prevent the file from showing.

I fell foul of the first one about 1'mins after I was telling students "if you can't find your image make sure you have no filters activated"

Nope, no filters are in effect and nothing is stacked.

I finally found the edited file, but it is not where I expected it and I think not where it belongs.

My original file is G:\working\2''8-'1-12\abc.nef. In the folder tree, a G: volume is shown with various folders, including "working" and its subfolders.

After editing and saving the file, now named abc-edit.nef, there is a NEW volume G: with its only contents being 2''8-'1-12 with one image in it. In other words, LR has created an additional volume and folder rather than placing the image in the folder it belongs in.

Surely it cannot be intended to do this, can it? Surely a volume and folder should not be listed twice?

Also, fwiw, when I edit a PSD file, I get the expected LR2 dialog asking whether to edit the original or a copy, etc. When I edit a NEF file, that dialog never appears, I guess because what is edited is always a copy created when the NEF file + adjustments is converted to a PSD file? Although the title bar on the Photoshop window still says it is a NEF file.

This is correct and improved behaviour. The NEF file is RAW and as such cannot itself be modified. The file in Photoshop will have the nef extension in the title bar but only until the file is saved.

As for your previous post Im sure it is not the intended behaviour and would agree that a Volume should not be listed twice.

1. Does a restart of the app clear the double volume listing?
2. try moving the folder into itself. I do remember seeing something very similar a mac machine where a volume or folder was listed twice. In that case one of these solutions cleared it.

1. Close and restart LR2 does not help.
2. Moving the directory onto itself is a disaster. Everything gets moved to a second directory inside the first. Then I have to dig myself out of that using Windows Explorer. I cannot move the file from the second directory to the first, as LR rightfully complains there is already a file of that name in the target directory.

This is discouraging....

[Edit]P.S., I just found a 2''-message thread on this problem in the Adobe Lightroom forum. Looks like it is a bug. Synchronizing the folder seems to be the only thing that works for me.

Yes it is.

When Lightroom displays two identical volumes with supposedly two identical files - Are there actually 2 identical files in Explorer? or is Lightroom referencing the same file which is infact in the correct place?

this would indicate a problem with the folder pane of Lightroom.

Can you or have you been able to repeat this behaviour?
Consider trying a relaunch and optimize from the Catalog preferences if you are able to repeat.
Also consider trying to repeat this behavior in a new smaller catalog just so we don't mess up anything important in your current catalog.
This would also help to narrow down an issue related to the current catalog. If you cannot repeat it in a new catalog that is.

The original post title it would seem is no longer the issue. Such as to say that an edited file is created and does not require an import but the behaviour is odd in that the file (as far as LR is concerned ) exists in a location that should not and may not actually exist ( the new volume and folder)

I added a PS to my earlier post. It's a bug and there is a 2''+ message thread in the Adobe LR forum about it. Resynching the directory seems to be the fix that works for me.

Aha!

You were adding at the same time as me. I did not see that. Good research on your part. Glad its a known bug. Hopefully re-synching is a workable solution for you to continue w/Lightroom.

Cheers

I ran into this exact same problem last night. However I have had it work properly too. I can't figure out what the difference in circumstances was but now I'm having the problem where I need to resynch the folder.

There are far too many bugs in version 2.' that although I really like the new features, it's hardly worth all this headache.

I have found a workaround that works on my system. Define Photoshop CS3 as a secondary editor and use the secondary editor for editing in Photoshop. After doing that, I find that the image is returned to the current directory and stacked as documented.

I tried that but when I went to add CS3 it told me I already had it chosen as my primary editor.
Look for a button on that dialog that says "use anyway." That allows you to create the secondary editor for Photoshop CS3.

Thanks.

I don't think I noticed anyone adding the workaround that's been suggested for this issue (if I understand this as the same bug that I have). Its suggested to go to your preferences and set your additional external editor as PCSC3 (and you will probably get a message saying that you already have your editor set as CS3--do you want to continue or some such. Just say yes *smile*). Then when you right click over your image to edit, choose the photoshop.exe instead of with PSCS3. This seems to work for the majority of people. It will open correctly with the processed in LR image. Process further and then 'save' or 'save as' (I choose 'save as" and be sure) and it will save it beside the original RAW file with the PS processing.

Before, I was importing the tiff (or psd) file back into LR but found this on the user to user forum and it works fine for me. It, of course, means you can't do the neat things of merge to HDR, etc., but for now it means I don't have to do anything extra to get my file back into LR.

Work around this problem

1. Close and [SNIP} Synchronizing the folder seems to be the only thing that works for me.

Try this work around until Adobe sort it properly :-

This situation is due to a bug with the way Lightroom - Photoshop and Camera Raw work together - change back to CameraRaw 4.4 and the problem goes away. I'm sure Lightroom 2.'1 will fix this.
I hope this helps

Quite right Tom, either changing back to ACR 4.4 forces LR to render the file rather than passing the raw data to PS, or setting PS as the 'additional external editor' will do the same job.

Hi I too am having problems with this. I edited some images in photoshop and saved them. The original folder is still showing the original images and then a new folder has been created with the same name as the original but only showing the images i had edited. When I tried to synchronise the files the edited images stayed as they were but the numerical count of the original images went up by the number of the edited images but did not include the images. When will a fix be forthcoming?

We don't know yet I'm afraid Alan - and it's unlikely to be announced until it's ready. You can take a fair bet that they're working hard on it though.
