LR2.6 hangs when quitting

[size=1'pt]I'm running LR 2.6 on a MacBookPro with OS 1'.5.8

When I try to quit LR, it hangs and must be force-quit. I can then launch it again and use it without any problem, at least until I try to quit again, when it again freezes up on me.

I've tried going into catalog settings and telling it to relaunch and optimize, but before it can relaunch it must quit...and it hangs. I've tried switching to another catalog, but that also requires a relaunch and when it quits, it hangs.

Other steps I've taken are to delete the prefs...same result. And I trashed/reinstalled the whole app...same result.

Any thoughts on how to get out of this? My work is starting to pile up because I don't trust LR enough right now, even though I seem to be able to use the app just fine until quitting time.

Hi Dane, welcome to the forum!

If you hold down Opt while starting LR, can you start a clean catalog? And with that clean catalog, can you quit correctly?

Have you repaired permissions on your drive lately?

Yes. In fact, I've tried a couple of additional tactics since posting and found that I could launch and quit a different catalog by double-clicking on that catalog file. So after digging around a bit, I found and deleted the lrcat.lock and lrcat-journal files but to no avail.

Yes, and it didn't help. So it appears to be a problem with that catalog, right? Is there a way to fix it? Would you recommend option-starting and selecting the problem catalog, then checking the "test integrity of this catalog" box? Here's the good news, if there is any: I'm almost finished using this catalog anyway. For reasons I don't want to go into here, I have two catalogs I want to merge and the only way I can see to do it is to "export as catalog" from one and "import from catalog" to the other. I hope that makes sense. I'm almost finished, and all that remains are photos from October-December 2''9.So in a sense, it might not matter what's wrong with this catalog. If I can just get everything exported, I can trash it. Because of this behavior, though, I don't really trust Lightroom until I can get the problem resolved.Thoughts? Thanks!

If you're wanting to import the whole catalog into another, you could skip the export as catalog step and go straight to import from catalog.

It does indeed sound like it's a problem specific to that catalog, so hopefully the transfer will leave it behind. I'd make sure you run backups before you merge them though (of both source and target) just in case the problem transfers to the main catalog.

So, I missed a bit... did we definitely narrow it down to that specific catalog?

Wow, it never struck me that I could skip the export step! I'm so far along now that I'll just finish up the way I've been doing it.
Yes, I'm pretty sure it's a catalog related issue, since I can launch and quit just fine with other catalogs. I'm going to run the integrity check on the old catalog and do way too many backups along the way...wish me luck!

Will do. FWIW, I just ran the integrity check on the problematic catalog. It didn't see fit to warn me about anything, but the problem is still there :-(

Reading through the thread I noticed at some point you deleted the .lr journal file. This should never be done. It is ok to delete the lock file as that is to prevent multi access but the journal file is crucial. (Having both of those files suggests either the catalog is open and in use or there has been a crash while LR was open.)It doesn't appear to have added to you woes but keep this in mind for the future.

Thanks for the heads-up on the journal file. I actually didn't delete it, just moved it off-disk in case I wanted to put it back for some reason.
I did find the problem, though. I broke the three final months of exporting from the old catalog into four chunks. For some reason I can't explain, I did a "get info" on the original photo files and on the exported files to see if they were the same. In three of the four cases they were identical right down to the last byte. In the fourth, the originals were larger that the export by one file and 6.6MB. It turned out I had a file named "DSC_974'.JPG.swp" in the originals that didn't get exported, nor did it show up in my library view. I googled a bit, deleted the file, and am now happy to report that I can launch and quit Lightroom as expected!
