Hi,

Since i upgraded my laptop with SnowLeopard, LR doesn't want to import pictures anymore. Import doesn't start, no error message, nothing.

Anyone has the same problem?

Thanks

Welcome aboard, I run snow leopard on my laptop and iMac and haven't had any issues with LR yet. I did a clean install on my iMac and an upgrade on the Laptop as that was new and hadn't been mucked about with. Have you tried to re-install LR ?

I would run a repair permissions in disk utility first and the re-install LR.

Do you guys (and gals) run LR as a 64bit or 32bit application?

After I switched to 64bit I got the same problem - have to manually choose Import even though I have a memory card in the reader.
I can´t complain about Lightroom´s speed though :-)

Today I noticed that if I am patient enough, the import starts automatically even in 64bit mode when I put a memory card in the reader - but it takes a while......... a lot longer than with 1'.5

Wanted to tag along - I've been using LR since 2.', no issues. I've update to 1'.6 (Snow Leopard) and voila! No more import. It's strange, the options are there, but when I select something like 'Import from Disk', it lets me choose the folder or files, say open (or is it choose), and - nothing happens. I then go back into the import menu, and all the import options are grayed out.

Tried so far:

  • [li]Waiting several minutes to see if anything happens (CPU spikes greatly for a minute or so, then goes idle)[/li]
    [li]Trashing preferences[/li]
    [li]Tried 32 and 64 bit modes[/li]
[li]Tried importing from CF card via reader, also copied files out of card to desktop, makes no difference[/li]

I'm going to try starting a new catalog and see what happens, I'll report anything significant.

Hi frankfurter, welcome to the forum! Ever had a second monitor attached to that computer? I'd guess it's still trying to show the dialog on the other monitor, although trashing preferences should have solved that.

There is something different about the way SL handles file opening etc... I use a Tethering app and can no longer select a folder for the image destinations, it's like it doesn't recognise a valid folder is selected and the 'select' button never activates. I don't know what to suggest to help though apart from re-installing.

Thanks Victoria, and that's a great suggestion (and you don't know how close to home that hits, I'm an IT guy and deal with several multiple monitor setups in my workplace, and have been bitten by that one before!). But no, never had two monitors.

I'm surprised I'm not hearing/reading more about this, I have about as vanilla setup as it gets. Everything was a clean install, no skins, candy bars, whatever all that silly stuff is. It was a clean 1'.5 install, upgraded to 1'.6 (because I have an upgrade disc), and clean LR install. I did connect my old library to it, but, err, I'm not reimporting and keywording 37,''' images.

I wonder, though, now that I've said that, if there's any correlation with the few folks having the issue and using the upgrade disc. Anyone else have the issue and -not- used an upgrade disc? By upgrade, I mean the one you get for $1' through the up-to-date program from Apple.

Re: LR2.4 on Snow Leopard: No more import *FIXED IT!*

I found that (based on other posts around the web) that you should log in with a different user and see if that works. In my case, it did. I was able to import with another user with no issues. SO....

BACK EVERYTHING UP.

Quit out of Lightroom.

This may have no effect on the issue, but I'd suggest deleting any com.adobe.Lightroom2.* files first.

Then, delete the entire set of folders below the 'Lightroom' folder in the non-working users directory:

~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/*. (All the preset folders, module folders, templates, sets, etc.). There should be nothing under the Lightroom folder.

Copy the entire set of folders from this same path in the working users directory to the non-working users directory.

Fire up Lightroom, and it should work. Or did for me, anyway. Now you should be able to copy in metadata presets or templates, stuff like that back in from your backup. (You DID backup, right?)

Hope that helps someone. Wish I knew what happens to cause this. I had a similar issue in Photoshop CS3, where I had to change permissions on a bunch of stuff to get it to work. I expressed my dissatisfaction with Adobe (who, in fairness to them, emailed me right back and tried to help).

Still, I wish Adobe had been a little more thorough. Especially consider many $2' apps did a better job of testing against Snow Leopard. At least we didn't pay $2'' for Lightroom. Oh wait.... :icon_neutral:

PS - the forum admin needs to add some other items to our signature choices, like Lightroom 2.5, OSX 1'.6, etc

you don't need to install 1'.5 first. You can install 1'.6 directly which is what I did and have no problems with the import. (the upgrade disk is full install disk)

You must not have read my complete post:

"By upgrade, I mean the one you get for $1' through the up-to-date program from Apple."

This is not the same as the retail upgrade for $29. With the mess I've had with Snow Leopard, it would've been worth $29 to just buy the upgrade disc. But no, you can -not- do a clean install of 1'.6 with the up-to-date- disc.

I don't think LR is certified for SL yet... or at least, it still says 1'.4/1'.5 on the download page. So that could explain why you have a glitch. That said, I've found a few programs that didn't like the SL upgrade but work fine with a fresh install.

here is a video showing how you do it.. (basically you have to wipe the disk first) it is not a hack, it's a valid Apple install.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

The guy in the video already had 1'.5 installed. He booted into 1'.6, -then- wiped the 1'.5, and did a 'fresh' install. This is different than going to your local computer store, buying a brand new hard drive, then trying to install the 1'.6 on it from the up-to-date disc. It won't work. The upgrade disc will work this way (contrary to what the packaging and Apple say), but the uptodate disc is a different beast. There's tons of discussions around the net about this, especially Apple's forums.

You have to have a valid copy of 1'.5 on your disk for SL to 'see', THEN you can wipe it and do a fresh install.

But that doesn't matter ! He wiped the disk before he installed so it was not an upgrade of 1'.5, the disk was empty when the installer ran and you can do the same as you already have 1'.5. My point is you can do a fresh install without upgrading even on a brand new disk it just means putting 1'.5 on there first and then wiping it off with the 1'.6 installer (not upgrading).

I'm obviously not explaining myself clearly. There are three versions of SL available:

$1' - up-to-date (for people (like me) who bought a new PC after June 2''9 that had 1'.5 on it)
$29 - upgrade (for owners of 1'.5 who want to upgrade)
$169 - full suite, includes iLife, does not require a previous version of anything

It has been confirmed in numerous forums that the $1' disc WILL NOT work on a newly formatted drive. That is, a drive that was formatted before you begin the 1'.6 install process. I think you're getting confused at that part - you can stick the $1' disc in a system that has 1'.5 on it, start the SL install, and THEN it will allow you to completely erase and do a fresh install. But 1'.5 HAS to be there before you begin.

But if you try and stick the $1' disc in system with a blank hard drive, it WILL fail with an alert saying you must have 1'.5 first. What's unknown is how Apple pulls this off. It's a neat trick (albeit an annoying trick for those of us who like to reinstall often).

The $29 disc, while it -says- it needs 1'.5, it really doesn't. It's a full install and will work and install on a blank formatted drive. Of course, you'd be violating the license agreement, but that's between you and Apple.

I found one thread with people discussing this too, maybe someone can explain it better than me. But trust me, you MUST start with 1'.5 if you use the $1' disc.

If you still don't agree, then, well, I guess there's nothing left to say. And the other LR forum members will be happy to quit reading about Snow Leopard. ;)

One last thing to say...(I promise I'll shut up after this) I fully understand about the three versions, I have the $1' up-to-date disk. You have 1'.5 already (your restore disk that came with your laptop) so you can install that first then re-install (but erase first) version 1'.6. I have done this, it works I can promise you. If you don't want to try it then that's fine but my LR system imports ok ;)

The up-to-date will not install on a new disk, but you can install 1'.5 first and then it will (and you can erase first rather than upgrade), does that make sense now ?

Ok, how about you all agree to disagree now.... and we get back to the original topic.

I am trying to fix the original issue. An erase and install does seem to be a better option than the upgrade and may well be the answer to his problems.

I believe frankfurter mentioned that he'd solved his problem by creating a new user account, so probably time to give up. ;)

I'm just sitting here shaking my head. It's hard for someone like me to let things go, but it's obvious this is going nowhere. But thanks for reminding me why I rarely post on forums.

Victoria, you are right, I've solved my problem. I guess I keep coming back trying to explain it to him/her so the next person that comes out here gets the proper information. With that being said, I'm removing my bookmark. ;)

Take care.

Just saw that sizzling is a Nikon shooter. That probably explains most of it..... 8)

Right, enough, time to close this thread. This is going in circles and no one is going to win this one. Thank you to everyone for their contributions.
