I've upgraded to LR2. Now I am trying to add a parent folder as my folders are all directly under my C: drive (pretty much by date) with a few oddball photos around in lower subfolders. I have no option showing for adding a parent folder no matter which folder I right click on - the C: or any of the subfolders. I've checked properties on the subfolders and they each show C:/subfolder as the path. I've tried adding a folder to C: and dragging another folder into it but I only get the photos in the new folder and not the folder that held them. I don't want 35,'''+ files in the one folder. I need a parent and subfolders so I can move them off to an external drive to free up space. What am I missing?

Lrfan,

Are you working within LR? I am going to assume that you are. If not, you are going to have major linking problems. In the library mode, you should see your catalog on the right side of the screen. You should see your C: drive and your external drive( whatever the letters you are using G,H,I or whatever)( let's call it G to keep things simple here)
Go to your external drive and right click on the folder> create folder inside "G." Give the folder a new name(test)> push the create button. Once you have done that, go back to C: and pick whatever file you want to move and open it. Ctrl-A will highlight all images and then drag them over to the new folder in G: If you right click on the new folder, you get another window and click create folder inside "test," this should be your subfolder.

Thanks, Bob. Yes, I have been working inside LR. I finally got the new drive to show up (I remembered reading something about adding one photo and then importing it so the drive would show in LR). After I did that, your directions worked fine. It's going to take forever at one folder at a time but at least it's transferring without incident. This approach allows me to re-organize my folders as I go and if something goes amiss I won't have a ton of files to reinput. I appreciate the pointers and help! Only 24,'''+ files to go. :)

Hopefully, someone may know of a short-cut for this process.

Good Luck,

Hi LRfan, welcome to the forum!

So the image folders are directly in C:\ so you've got C:\folder1 C:\folder2 and so forth - and Lightroom shows a long list of folder1, folder2, is that right?

If they were in C:\Images\folder1 etc you'd have no trouble - but as it stands, there is no parent folder to add. Good lesson for the future - never put LR folders directly into the root of the drive - and a good http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform"]Feature Request[/URL] - please allow 'locate missing folder' for whole volume, not just subfolders.
