Here is what I am trying to do.

I figured out that I can open up an image using edit as open smart object in Photoshop CS3 which allows me to open up the camera raw dialog as my initial editing workflow to adjust WB, etc.

From there I start going through my workflow in editing the image in PS CS3.

After I'm done, what I can't figure out is how come it doesn't go back into LR but instead it asks me to save it elsewhere (as PSD or JPG, etc.)

Essentially, I would like to launch the image from LR into PS and use PS to perform my edits but then bring it back into LR for archiving purposes. This way if I want to grab the image again at a later time, I can just export using LR.

Am I doing something wrong or not understanding how I should go about this? Please help.

Unless you're John, hiding under another name, I have a serious case of deja vu!

In CS4, it saves straight back to the same folder with the name set in External Editor preferences, unless you specify otherwise. That said, when I tested CS3, the same does not apply.

I'm trying to find out whether that's expected behaviour (possibly a lack of correct links in CS3 making it impossible...)

Something whacky going on here, I know I answered this question yesterday!! I would say it is expected behaviour of CS3 as the extended interoperability of CS4/LR is listed as a CS4 feature.

Yeah, I think you're right. I thought CS3 behaved the same way as CS4, but I must be imagining things, as I just went back and tried it on 2.'.
