Hi all,
I have noticed that when i view in the library module a portrait with some light to shadow transitions on the face, a pale green hue is noticed around the point of transition. This distinctly green hue in these areas is not detectable on my camera's LCD, nor when i open up the JPEG file in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

As far as i am aware of, the act of importing doesn't alter or apply any changes to the file. Are there any adjustments that i can make so that LR libary view of a picture (obviously before any contemplation of editing) accords with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (and also the LCD on my D8')? I have once of those 22inch e-IPS Dells, and haven't properly calibrated it - i have only gone off values of other owners of the same monitor and tried the standard preset modes - these settings have resulted in the colours of Windows viewer matching up with the D8' LCD which is what i want.

please note- this is my first post and i'm relatively new to LR, i have done introductary tutes but they haven't mentioned this

Many thanks in advance

Cheers for the reply, here are the pictures. orig is the original file. To give you an idea of what i'm seeing, winscreen is a screenshot of windows pic viewer, LRscreen is a screenshot from LR library. for reference, i see the green at the boundary between the forehead and the hair, and also on the neck (see screenshots).

some further information:

I installed the same version of lightroom on my other computer running vista, and connected it to the same monitor. when i imported the photos in question they appear fine in the library view, completely free of that greenish problem (so i guess this rules out any serious issues with my monitor calibration - its still just set to standard).

I guess it seems to be a colour space problem with my lightroom installation on XP? highly confusing for an amature like me. I will update my monitor and graphics card drivers on XP, but i'm not sure if this is the problem since the colours are fine using the windows viewer

I can see a slight green cast in both lr and ps, but not as bad as your second screenshot.
It looks to me as it was induced by to much of jpeg compression, there is lots of jpeg smoothing to be seen all over the picture.

hmm, then maybe the posted pictures weren't such a good idea, given i wasn't able to attach the actually original (file size 4MB) but a 2'% quality lightroom export

Welcome from me too wansmith!
  1. Is your original a JPEG or raw image?
  2. Did you attempted any manipulation in Lightroom for seeing this? A JPEG will rapidly reveal artifacts if you pump up the darks even a little.
  3. You say I calibrated my monitor to standard but to me, it means that it is not calibrated at all.
  4. Picture and fax viewer is not color managed and will never show you the very same as Lightroom. Best approach is to export a JPEG in the sRGB color space to view it in Picture and Fax Viewer.

hey cheers for the reply.

1. this particular image was taken as a jpeg. i'm having the same problem with jpegs and raws when viewing inlightroom library. Even when i export the raws as sRGB jpegs with 1''% quality and then reimport them into LR and view them in the library, the colours are somewhat different in general, but the green haze remains.

2. absolutely no attempt at any manipulation, all files are as imported. No quick developing either.

3. point taken. If from what i have been saying prior suggests that the monitor calibration is at issue, then i better attend to that! I'll order a spyder (after reading up about all the different versions and how to use it). I assume there is not other way i can do it?

4. point taken. from what i've read, LR library seems to display in Adobe RGB, and prophoto RGB in Develop. I think my issue is that I like the sRGB better for these photos, but that may mean that my monitor simply isn't calibrated to my computer.

I use the Spyder Express (the cheapest one) and it works great for calibrating my screen and laptop.

Just one more thought.... make sure you are not 'auto developing' during your import by applying a preset. Check the import dialogue box in the lower portion. You can also set a default develop setting under the 'develop' menu. If you have set this by accident (like I once did) it could cause you some problems.

If LR is making some changes then you will only see them in LR not when you view the original jpeg with other software as LR records the changes seperately and does not update the original file.

I noticed you installed LR onto another machine and this didn't exhibit the problem. This could be because it has not been 'modifed' and is is not making any automatic development changes.

Also have a look at Edit > Preferences > Preset tab, the first item, Apply auto tone adjustments, to ensure it's disabled.

cheers for the replys all,

okay i can confirm that there are no develop settings being applied on import and that the auto tone is unchecked.

I fresh installed cs2 photoshop and Gimp, then imported the original, unedited photo into both - Gimp displayed it exactly like windows viewer, and CS2 displayed the photo exactly like LR - with the green cast.

Assuming Gimp uses sRGB and LR/PS(cs2) uses adobe/prophoto RGB to display pics my deduction is:
i don't think it has anything to do with any preferences or developing in LR, but it seems as though it is an issue of how the Adobe/prophoto RGB is displaying colours on my monitor from my desktop pc. (no problems green with my laptop when connected to the monitor). does the calibration software make a profile for my monitor for specifically the Adobe/prophoto RGB, or does it involve me tweaking the RGB values on my monitor itself?

(note the above is the deduction of an amature user who has just done some reading over the past 24 hours and thus I may be completely on the wrong track)

Calibration calibrates your monitor and the associated hardware it's connected to (largely the graphics card) It produces an icc profile that corrects for the hardware aberrations.

Are you on a PC or Mac ? there is something called Adobe Gamma on PC's that can also upset your colour settings. I'm on a Mac so don't have any experience of it, someone here will chime in I'm sure.

PC user, windows XP. I'm tempted to install vista and see if the problem persists, my laptop is running vista, and no such issues arrise with the colours in LR on that monitor.

the help is much appreciated

SOLVED

was indeed a calibration issue. i researched adobe gamma, and ran the eyeball calibration test and created an icc profile and switch to that one. no more green cast thing!

I'm going to get spyder 2 express quicksmart and calibrate properly.

lesson to novices intending on using photoediting software - calibrate your monitor! else weird colour casts may show up

Cheers all

Before you calibrate your monitor you may have to disable Adobe Gamma or they will 'fight' each other. Check it out as like I said I'm a Mac user and we don't have Adobe Gamma so I could be wrong.
