Sudden and inexplicable condition here. Each camera will mount in LR's Devices pane in Import mode but spinning gear in bottom task bar persists with no conclusion, (see screenshot). This happens with both a Sony Alpha7iii and an old Canon G12 - I can view files in each camera. Any ideas anyone? Thanks!

Hi Johan and Cletus, delighted to report that I'm sorted now - many thanks to you both.
I upgraded to LrC 9.3, bought a card reader and when neither strategy worked I explored the security issue. It was, in fact the security setting in Catalina that frustrated the process. It seems that life, for less than technically proficient users, is not getting easier..
Thanks again folks! Eugene.
