LR v2 - Crash, Crash Crash

I am so tired of having to restart this bloody application.

When LR v2 came out I tested it on one big event with about 1'''' images in it and it crashed once or twice over several thousand images.

I am now editing a wedding and its crash ever 1 - 5' image edited.

I am running a Quad Core Vista box with 3GB RAM.

When it gets hung up I check the Task Manager to see if its still working and it says it is. But it never recovers. I have to kill the application and start over.

I am not loosing any data but it goes back in time and if I delete an image from a Collection it may or may not be back.

Anyone else having some crashing issues?

Kelly sorry you're having trouble. Personally, I'm not having any crash bugs, altho' I see reports of others having problems, like yourself. Like you, I stress tested the commercial release with a week long event of 75''+ images. The biggest fubar I saw, other than cranky local adjustments, and occasional fits of sluggishness, was the 'multiple undo' bug. This bug will over-do the undo command and back-out x steps. In one case, for me, it backed out about 9' minutes worth of work.

I assume you've tried all the standard trouble-shooting tricks; if not, see the Tips/Tricks forum for a list. Other than that, I don't know what else to tell you.

Hey Brad,

Thanks for your message.

I know the bug you are talking about, the good thing is you can always Redo and use the history pallet to do the undo needed.

I have noticed the sluggishness, mostly going between Library and Develops but at times I get a stall hangup from image to image in develops.

I guess my next try will be a fresh install to see if that helps things out.

I am now on a long stretch of no crashing but it crashed three times before that all in about 1'min. There really is no real pattern to why its doing what its doing.

Nothing to write home, or elsewhere, about..but I've had three "Sorry your application is out to lunch, we're gonna shut you down.." messages from Microsoft since I started my migration this evening..

And any crash logs from anyone would be really really useful too.

See, that would be a really good question Kelly, and I can tell you where to find Mac crash logs, but that won't help! So I'll have to leave a XP/Vista guy to answer that one!

As far as what to do with them, ideally send them direct with a bug report Official Feature Request/Bug Report Form or drop them here and they should get picked up.

I think the issue I am seeing has to do with catalogs that I upgraded from 1.4 to v2 catalogs. I just loaded last nights event in v2 and things worked just fine. Switched back to finish up a wedding and it crashed by image 4. I will make a new catalog for the just of the raws in this event and see if that fixes things.

I will export the remaining files to DNGs and make a new Catalog for these. This way I won't have to redo any batch edits.

Just so you know, I don't use the catalog to keep track of my work. I don't need to use keywording. I make a new catalog for each event.

Before I migrated my system to a new powerful workstation I was having all sorts of trouble with Lr v2. Everything from freezing, crashing, multiple undo's, screen flickering, losing my second monitor... you name it.

Since the migration things have been ok but I am finding smaller more simple annoyances than anything else. Last night I did manage to get Lr to hang up and never come back when I was setting catalogue preferences. I did read on another forum that a user had encountered this same problem.

Honestly if Lr can't work properly on a system designed for live broadcast and simulation rendering then really I need to mail adobe a kick in the arse.

Can you tell I'm frustrated? I can't believe I actually paid someone else for this mental anguish.

Picture yourself on a tropical island, cool breezes, blowing, cold drink, the rumble of the surf ..... you take a deep breath and relax. Push the frustration away, far away.

:)

We understand, we're living it too. While all viewpoints are welcomed, including the occasional rant, we do try to focus on helping folks get the most out of LR (as we find it) and the systems they do have.

You say you've moved to a killer system; there are several threads here in the equipment forum on the topic. You might want to highlight your setup and experiences there.

One of the users here reported that he identified an orphaned lock file in the catalog folder as causing the edit pref's freeze up. Look for LRCAT.LOCK. Again, I agree LR should clean up after itself, but we're trying to move forward.

Yes its a shame things are not working better out of the box but its a world where the consumer is the lab and we are the ones that discover the problems. The good thing is Adobe is usually fast to get out fixes, one of the reasons I moved over.

The Support you get from Phase One is a joke, if they screw up you will wait over 6 months for the next attempt.

On the issues I have noticed, most of the crashes have been sorted out by exporting to DNGs, make a new catalog and import the DNGs... I will keep working going to see how it works out but so far its looking like most of my issues stem from using upgraded v1.4 catalogs to v2.

Over the last couple of days I've tweaked my computer to help the performance. I've given Photoshop 4 gigs of RAM for it's own and I've up'd the LR cache in the preferences panel. Things seem to be going much better now.

I haven't had a crash *knock on wood* since, there has only been one instance where the adjustment brush slowed down.

What I did notice is that my usb wireless adapter dropped it's signal at the same time. After closing it's connection manually, LR sped right back up. Now I keep the workstation offline and load any files that need to go online or emailed to my server and use a laptop to access and send them where they need to go.

The internet connection and use of resouces might be something that others might want to look at.

I increased my cache to 5GB but still not change. I still have LR v2 crashing for no apparent reason. I have tried to purge it from time to time but that does not help either.

I as starting to think its a Quad core issue but I see others sorting it out but my issue continues...

Any other ideas?

Kelly

I don't have time to read right back through the whole thread right now, so a quick checklist:

1. Deleted preferences?
2. Tried new catalogs?
3. Tried uninstalling 1.x from the system? There some reports that helps.
4. Always the same files or different files? Could there be a corrupted file in there somewhere?

Thanks for the help Victoria! This is making it very hard to run a business with it crashing so much!!!

Answers to your questions.
1. Delete preference - I don't know what you mean here.
2. Yes - I have tried upgrading from v1 to v2 catalogs and I have exported all of the images to DNG and made a new catalog. did not help.
3. I have not tried uninstalling v1, I always left it incase I needed to go back to it. I will try that a soon as the lighting storms go past!!! (always something slowing me done!)
4. Its different every time I turn around. Different files, different catalogs, different events, different file formats etc! No pattern to why its happening.

I have my cache at 5GB but I will up it to 1'GB and see how that works. But first I will uninstall V1 and see how that goes.

Kelly,
On Vista:
The default location of the Preferences is...

Windows Vista - [systemdrive]\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 Preferences.agprefs

1) Just rename the file something like "......agprefs.bak". This will enable you to restore it easily if the change doesn't help. This will force LR to create a new default preferences file.
2) By default, on Windows systems some files and folders in this directory tree are 'hidden'. You will likely have to go Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > mark the radio button for 'Show hidden files and folders'

Add to the crash list. Grid View, about 3' images tagged as Rejects, Photo/Delete Rejects caused an irrecoverable crash...each time I attempted the delete..

Another crash... Deleting Rejected images... um, getting a little tired of this..
