LR recognizes but will not import some jpgs

I have just upgraded to LR 2.1 from 1.4. The migration has been a bumpy one... my current problem is this:
  • I shoot all jpegs and organize my picture files in folders by month when downloaded from my camera cards -- e.g., "'7 2''8", "'8 2''8", and so on.
  • When attempting to import all pictures from my recent months -- May through October -- LR does not successfully import all of the pictures, but instead simply skips some for no apparent reason. Example: 991 of the 1'3' pictures in "'8 2''8" come in, 5886 of the 6'54 "'9 2''8" pictures come through, etc.
  • When I then go to try the import again, LR recognizes that there are still files there that have not been added to the catalog, but then again fails to do so successfully.
  • Here's the procedure I'm following:
  1. Open my LR catalog
  2. Click the "Import" button
  3. Click "Choose Files" in the dialog box
  4. Navigate to my folder with the pictures, select it, and click "Import All Photos in Selected Folder"
  5. LR flashes the "Comparing with Catalog Contents" box, then comes up with the normal "Problem with Importing Files" window that shows the list of files already present in the Catalog. I click on "Import" here....
  6. Then get the "Import Photos" window, and lo and behold it shows previews of all of the files that are missing in the catalog! For example, for my "'8 2''8" folder, it shows 39 files to be imported (remember, 39 + 991 already in LR = 1'3' total pictures in that folder). With great expectations, I make sure all are checked and click on "Import".....
  7. LR briefly shows the active "Import files at their location", then returns with....an empty screen and the words "No photos in selected item"!
  8. Same results no matter how many time I repeat the exercise. Does not matter if the "Don't re-import suspected duplicates" box is checked or unchecked. Also get same results even if I just try to import one single picture file of the ones that are failing...LR sees it, but then in the end fails to bring it into the catalog. I have also completely deleted the folders from LR 2 and reimported the entire folder, with the same results...
The "offending" jpeg files are in every other way fine...

Any help that can be given will be greatly, greatly appreciated!

Try putting the "suspect" files in another folder (well one or two for a test) and importing from there.. There must be some conflict somewhere and it will be a process of elimination.

OK, good suggestion, Geoff. That works. I put a few of the suspect files in a new folder, then ran the import from there, and all came into LR just fine. Also including my keywords I had previously saved to the files in LR 1.4, etc...

Any suggestions for what is actually going wrong? And how I can get LR to accept the files in their "home" folders?

Thanks.

Answering Mark's question: In the left panel, it's the "Previous Import" collection that is selected at the end of the attempted import process. With ' for the # pictures it contains.

No idea what would be causing it but there was significant catalog changes between LR1 and 2. So I would put all the non imported ones in that new folder, import them and then shift them back to the original folder within LR. I had a couple of glitches similar and it took the hard yards to work through it.
Sorry nothing simpler to offer.
Although you did try "synchronising the original folder? Right/ctrl click the folder for the menu with synchronise, that may work??

Thanks again, Geoff. I tried the synchorizing path, but that takes me to the same place in the end as the Import pathway....sees the "missing" photos, but then doesn't actually import them in the end.

Guess I will have to slog it out manually bringing them in via the separate folder then shifting them back, as you say.... at least that appears to be a working option.

Anyone else with some magic to offer, I'll be happy to listen!

Many thanks.

All the best with the job !!:lol:

Go on, I'll ask the obvious question.... the files didn't just import but get hidden by a filter, did they? That could explain why they won't import again.

Victoria -- no indeed. LR will continually see the files as not imported yet every time I walk through the steps....but they never come in, at least while staying in their original folders.

Furthermore, I don't have any filters turned on.

Thanks.

Update -- I've just realized that the photos LR is skipping/refusing to import are actually every 24th picture in the folders on my harddrive! Sounds like a strange bug in the code to me....

Insert 24 shot roll film joke here. :)

That's definitely strange, haven't encountered that one before. I assume you've tried importing those problem pix one-by-one and similar experiments?

That's a truly bizarre problem - so if you have 48, does it skip the 48th as well?
