LR Preference - Presets

In the presets preference there is a section called 'Location' with a check box for 'Store Presets With Catalog'. In a David Marx tutorial video I just saw, he recommends to turn this checkbox on.

Is this essential?

No, it changes the directory the presets are stored in to the same as the catalog directory.

Read Denis Pagé's interesting take on the subject. I may be wrong, but I don't believe that Nik is exactly correct here (oops, at least on Windows. Mac, no comment). In Windows, the 'store with catalog' presets get buried deep in the \\sysdrive:\documents & settings\user name\ directory tree.

The main issue is that it's an 'either/or' situation. Once you get the presets stored with a catalog, they're no longer available globally to other catalogs. If you only use one catalog, I guess there's no real difference.

Nik is correct for Mac. The settings get stored along side the catalog.

We still need to point out that they then become available to only that catalog. If you then export a catalog, the presets go to that one, and are not available to the current one (or at least it has happened to me in the past).

Does anyone store presets with the catalogue? I've no feelings either way, but I've never quite seen the point of the in-catalogue option and am happy with the visibility that the default setting provides.

Useful if you only use one catalog and it's stored on an external and used on a couple of different machines John, but that's about it.

I only use one catalog and used it for easy transfers between desktop/laptop. I also frequently change Lightroom's language and it is how I discovered all this. At the time, all my machines were WindowsXP based.

I don't store with catalog anymore but should give it a new run as my desktop is now MacOS Leopard/WindowsXP (boot camp), and my new laptop is Vista/Ubuntu Linux 9.'4 ... Still switching languages... :roll:
