LR not seeing duplicates from imported catalog

If I import a catalog into an existing one, when I then put a card in that has some of the same images as were imported with the new catalog, they get imported again instead of being ignored.

Really? Did you change the filenames anywhere along the line?

The only thing i did was change them to dng in the new catalog but when importing the card again had the settings set to convert to dng on import.

In the first catalog, changed to DNG when importing, or later? That could explain it at a push.

I have done both ways, converting when in the combined catalog and also before combining, but still the same result, a card with duplicate images converting to dng on import still get imported. I haven't tried RAW files yet and keeping them as RAW to see if the same happens.
