LR keeps renaming my EHD- then can't find images!

I have been using LR2 for about a year now. I have been having the same problem off and on for a while but now it is really starting to bug me. I feel like I am wasting a ton of time!

I am on a MacBook with all my images and catalog stored on an EHD that is not always plugged into my machine. When I plug my EHD in it shows on my desktop as "My Passport". When I open LR though the EHD shows up in my LR window as "My Passport 14" or whatever number it wants to put in there :-' Whenever it changes that number all of my folder of images have the good old question mark beside them. I have to go and relocate each folder. At first it wasn't a huge problem. Now that I have a ton of folders and images though it is killing me.

Does anyone know what is going on and what I can do to stop this from happening? I have begun to think that it is perhaps because I am not consistent in which USB port I use but can it really rename my EHD just because it is in a different port?? I am so confused and ready to stop locating my images over and over. Help! Thanks!

Jenn, Welcome to the forums.

Lightroom isn't renaming your drive, Windows is.

For future reference, you'll find Lr a lot easier to tame, (particularly with your statement, " relocating a ton of folders"), if you establish a single parent folder under which all of your Lr original image folders are contained.

[/quote]But her sig and statistics say Mac OSX :-) I know windows quirks are far reaching, but I did not know they extended into OSX

Jenn, if you are indeed on OSX, go to Disk Utility and find the drive. I've seen an issue before where OSX mounts a drive on different mount points each time and it gets confused - in the bottom line, see what the mount point is listed as. I can't remember how I fixed it, but if it shows a different number, I'll see if I can dig up the information I used. It was something to do with the volumes folder, but it's a bit fuzzy.

Oops, missed it completely, even in the text portion. So used to that be a Windows 'feature'.

Thanks for the catch. I'd say the 'parent folder' advice still applies, tho'.
