I shoot daul format (jpg and raw). It would be great if I could select the format to import into LR and auto backup both.

LR Import should allow the selection of jpg or raw files.

I would think the purpose of shooting RAW+JPEG is to have the option to individually use one or the other or both. For me this decision can only be done with a critical eye on the big screen. And this means import. The most logical thing to do is import the whole card. It is extra work to delete half your images after importing both, but it is a simple task.
Many of my JPEGs come out of the camera 'good enough'. These I keep, but only after I've made that assessment in LR. I hav not made the decision yet on the JPEGs that accompany the RAW that I process, but I suppose these could be deleted. Sometimes I save as few as 1'% of the photos from an upload.
If you insist on selectively importing into LR, the import dialog allows you to use the checkbox with each image thumbnail to pick the ones to import.
