Today I imported some new images in to LR 2.3 and a couple of them look like they are corrupted, showing some sort of lines in magenta and yellow on the right of the picture. I`ve seen this before but I always thought that the cause was my old under power computer, but now is happening with my new Mac too.
I`m using a 5dII with SAnDisk CF cards on a 8 core Mac Pro. I usually import the images to an external hard drive and then import from Lightroom.
I`ve attached a screenshot of how LR displays this particular image.

Thank you

Robert

I've never seen LR corrupt an image (although it's possible, of course), so have you checked that it is not the CF card...especially since it occurs on two different computers? I.e., how do your corrupted images look in Preview prior to importing them into LR? Are the same images corrupted on both computers? How are you transferring the images to the external hard drive (which could also be the cause of your corrupted files)? Are these JPEG or RAW files? If you are shooting RAW+JPEG are both formats corrupted? If you haven't already done so, take steps to determine the point in your workflow where the corruption actually occurs.

Your sample looks a lot like a Lexar card I've tested that has known corruption problems... at least one image per large photo shoot looks like yours.

It looks like that the image is corrupted even before entering LR. They look the same in Preview and if opened with DNG...so it`s not LR for sure.
I shot raw and jpg (fortunately large jpgs!)but only the raw is corrupted. If the problem was a faulty card or a faulty card reader shouldn`t be both the raw and the jpg corrupted?
Could the transferring to the external hard drive and then back to LR be the cause?

Roberto

File corruption is almost always a hardware issue, and usually happens when files are being written - either through moving, copying, backing up, etc. It rarely affects all of the files, so no, you wouldn't expect the raw and the jpeg to both be corrupted necessarily.

Places to look - card reader or cable are the usual suspects, faulty card possibly, connection to the external could be dodgy, as could the external itself. Could also be memory, internal hard drives, motherboard... the list really does go on! If you can narrow down when it happens (i.e. when loading the images from the card, when moving the files between hard drives), you can narrow down where it's going wrong.

Robert,

I have a 5d2 also and LR does appear to fail to render some of the shots - this has to be a bug in LR - I don't see the same if I open the CR2 files in Breeze browser pro - only in LR2.4 and Adobe Camera RAW. Again, its with just 2-3 shots in occasional sets I have shot. Today I imported a directory fiull of 175 images and 3 shots which initially appeared and rendered correctly had their render corrupted when I synced temperature and exposure settings from another image. Before this they were OK. Then later on they decided to render correctly, then every now and again when I click one of these images, the render switches to a white image along with the loupe version on my main monitor, then seconds later the render appears normal again. Very strange behaviour. I never saw this once using my old 5d, but with my 5d2 from v2.3 of LR (and now with 2.4 also), I get this issue. The CF cards are the same as I use on my 5d and I still get no corruption with images from my old camera. It's only the 5d2 images which this occasionally happens with. Until today I thoughit was the raw files themselves which were corrupt, and I even deleted them in some cases - which I now realise that it is LR causing the issue.

Cheers, Paul

p.s. mine is the Win x64 version (not mac)

You should file a bug report on this. Also try a new catalog and import copies of the problem files (just two or three), render previews and see if that solves the issue!!

Paul, any chance of dropping me one of the files that is corrupted in LR and ok in BB? I'd love to try it in a few other programs here, if you don't object.

Robert,

I am curious. How does the image look like when you view it on the camera itself?

Bob- the slide shooter at heart

Camera itself would only be looking at the embedded jpeg, and I'm pretty sure BB only uses the embedded jpeg unless you edit the raw file.

Just checked those corrupted images again and now LR is displaying them correctly - this does appear to be an intermittent issue.

Regarding comments about creating new catalog - pointless as the same rendering issue was seen in ACR and this doesn't use a catalog. Seems to be an adobe issue interpreting the CR2 file format of the 5d2 - it's definitely intermittent as I'm not seeing it today - maybe another memory/resource leak issue perhaps when LR deals with the 5d2 format when the OS is under a certain resource strain/load. Obviously similar issues on the mac version with 5d2 images as reported by the OP.

I have attached a screenshot of the same image from today - you will notice none of the setytings have even changed since the last screenshot of the corrupted preview was posted.

Thanks, Paul A
