I am trying to understand how these 2 things work together.

I have a Nikon D3''s and use Nikon's Picture Controls including their downloadable Portrait and Landscape profiles as well as their Vivid profile that comes in the camera. I use LR2 and have some Develop Presets like Matt K's "auto everything else" and "profile" presets.

I understand that if I shoot in JPEG the camera applies the Picture Controls to the finished file and that if I shoot in RAW it stores them as a set of instructions with the picture. Here is what I'd like to understand:

If I import RAW files into LR without any Develop Presets, does LR apply the Nikon Picture Controls?

If I import RAW or JPEG files into LR with a Develop Preset, does the LR develop preset override the Picture Controls to produce the finished product?

Explanations appreciated!

Lightroom never applies the Nikon picture controls. It renders its own image from the raw data. There are camera emulation profiles in the Camera Calibration tab in Develop, and if you don't like any of those you can make your own using the free DNG Profile Editor.
