Turned the computer on > Plugged CF card reader in > Plugged External HD in

Went to open LR from desktop, prompted that catalog could not be found > Opened the LRcat from within the Ext HD, which is with the image folders.

Thinking all opened well, i proceeded to import some images from CF card into what i thought was existing folder.

Previously in LR Folder view i had

  • [li]Local disc 'C'[/li]
    [li]Free Agent Drive E[/li]
Where my images and lrcat were in together
E/My Pictures/Raw files/Lightroom/folderxyz

Now my folder view is

  • [li]Local disc 'C'[/li]
    [li]EOS_Digital E[/li]
    [li] Free Agent Drive F[/li]
Where my images and lrcat are actually in
F/My Pictures/Raw files/Lightroom/folderxyz

but appear in LR under EOS_digital E

whats the best way to get this all in line again

thanks

When you plugged the card in first, Windows arbitrarily assigned drive E to the card. The Volume Lable on the card is "EOS_Digital ". The Volume label on the External HD is "Free Agent Drive". When you plugged in the external drive, Windows found that drive letter E was taken and assigned it the next available letter (It makes you wish you had another operating system like Linux or OSX).
When LR could not find your catalog on E, it burped. You told it to use the catalog on F.

Here's what I think the solution is. Plug the card back in and make sure it is plugged in first. (if you notice, the box in the line for the EOS_Digital drive is black not green) Also make sure the drive letter assigned to it is E: Now plug in the External HD and make sure it is F: In LR, Open E: and find your imported files. Select them and the folder containing them and drag it to where you normally import them into (what is now) F: This should keep your integrety of your catalog. Once you have done that. remove the card and the External HD and plug in the Ext HD and see that it is assigned to Drive E: Open LR and it may burp again and complain about a missing catalog. Help it find the catalog on E where it needs to be.

You might be better served by permanently relocating your catalog on the Local Drive C: The unless you have a HD crash Lightroom will always be able to find the catalog. If that HD crashes, Lightroom problems will be the least of your worries and you get to figure out how good your back-ups are.

Sorry Clee

But, what you suggest doesn't make sense to me. If i open E the images i just imported are not there. They are on F.
Your photo shows that the drive E: does not contain a card (that is why it is not green but black.) If you can find your imported images on Volume 'F:" then you don't need Volume "E:" in the Folder list. I don't know how, but all you need to do at this point is remove Volume (old E:) from the list and teach Windows that the Ext HD is "E:" not "F:"

If you have a backup of your catalog, you won't lose anything before the backup. If you screw this one up, just restore it with the backup.

yep, exactly....and i have no idea how!!

thanks anyways clee.

Or just point the drive back to the right letter Brad, and you should be mostly back to normal. It's probably easier than relinking all of the files in LR.

First and easiest thing I'd try - unplug the CF and restart Windows. Fixes a multitude of weirdness!

If that doesn't do the trick, you could just change the drive letter back to E before plugging the CF in again http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3'7844

You might just have to relink those 3 odd files currently showing on F when you're done.

Will try that tonite Victoria.

I am not fussed by the latest import - 3 images you can see on the F.

If this doesn;t work then what?

thanks

Try it and then we'll debate it. I'm 99% sure it'll work.

Phew, that's great to hear!

Nice not to have to change, create, screw around with the catalog.

I've never seen this before (maybe just not affect me), my dilemma and the solution. Good tips and tricks?

Preventative measure for the future then - just don't plug the card reader in until you've turned on.
