LR Crashes with Vista 64 Bit

I have two Dell computers running Vista 64 Bit and Lightroom 2.4. The desktop unit is Dell T74'' with Nvidia graphics card. The other computer is a laptop Vostro 172' with a nvidia graphics card. I started getting the crashes at different times, exporting, develop and slideshow. They may come every 1' minutes or it might be an hour before having a crash. i downloaded and install the latest video drives on both machines which seemed to help on the desktop. The laptop is still crashing two or three times during a work session.
Some data that might help:
Desktop has 8 GB of ram
C: 32' MB drive with only operating system and software installed (very little software except software to work on photos)
(3) 1 TB drives for data and backup
Laptop has 8 GB of ram
Laptop is new with only Photoshop CS3, Lightroom 2.4 installed, Nik Software and Photomatix installed.

Welcome to t the forum erv613. Thanks for taking the time to fill out your information so thoroughly. It really helps in the troubleshooting.

I'm also on Vista 64-bit on a desktop and laptop. Unfortunately, I haven't experienced this particular issue. If it were me, though, the next step I would take on the laptop would be to rebuild the preferences. Notes on that are here:

I have done as suggested, we shall see if this helps.

What video card are you using? After upgrading the video drivers on the desktop, it seems to be working just fine.I imported a little over 36,'' photos trying to break it but completed without any problems.

I do appreciate your suggestions!!

erv, good for you. Lr seems to particularly finicky about perfect video drivers, and monitor profiles. Not to single them out, but nVidia seems slightly more problematic than ATI or Matrox.

Agreed, nVidia and Lightroom don't seem to play as well as they should.

Currently, I have a nVidia 96''GTX+. My laptop has an ATI card, though, so I can't report as accurately on how nVidia might impact your laptop. As reported, no problems thus far on either.

If the preferences rebuilding doesn't work, post again and perhaps someone else can provide additional troubleshooting.

[/quote]I'd like to clarify that this statement is with respect to PC's as is the OP situation. nVidia on Mac's (like MacBook Pros) have had no such reported problems, AFAIK.

I am still getting the same message. It does seem to happen more on the EXPORT function than anything else. I am open to suggestions. My desktop has not crashed in a week, so maybe it is fixed. The only thing I done to it was loaded the lastest video drivers.

I would purchase another video card but that is not an option on a laptop or at least as far as I know. I do appreciate any and all help!!!

One tweak often recommended for nVidia cards is to set nVidia Control Panel/Advanced Settings/3D Settings/Adjust Image Settings With Preview to "Use my settings emphasizing: Performance". Although I don't know if it affects Lightroom, another tweak is to install or update to the latest version of Direct X 9. It works side by side with Direct X 1' and having both installed doesn't cause conflicts. You should also check with Dell for any BIOS/motherboard updates that may be available. Still, it would be a real coincidence if both your computers were to have hardware problems at the same time.

As far as Lightroom itself goes, you could try the common steps: delete your preferences, optimize the catalogs, delete and regenerate standard previews, and, if worse comes to worse, try a new catalog.

As you can see from my signature, I run Vista 64 bit on both my laptop and my desktop and I can't remember the last time it crashed on either.

I made the suggested settings changes and installed latest version Direct X 9. So far, I have not had a crash yet.

I will keep testing to see if everything will keep wrorking. The suggestions have made improvements and MAYBE fixed the problem.

I am still getting LR crashes, not as often but every two or three hours. I have noticed most come during EXPORT, push export and nothing will happpen and then the crash.

Is there a particular size file or folder that is causing the crash? Maybe the Vista user permissions on the laptop are causing the problem?

No, I exported the same file at least 2' times into the same folder and then on the 31st time it might crash. It might crash on the 5th time or maybe not until the 5'th, there does not seem to be any pattern.

I'm assuming you're still referring to the laptop; it may just be the general instability of Vista on that particular piece of hardware:

It is likely not an LR issue at all; you may want to continue to upgrade drivers, etc., but I would recommend you either convert down to Windows XP or upgrade to Windows 7. Vista is simply not a long-term viable solution.

One last thought: there may be some merit in looking at the memory management settings (RAM and swapfile), if the drivers are not the culprit.

Dell techanical support worked on my laptop for a little over three hours this afternoon without finding a solution to the problem. It does appear to be a combination of Vista, Nvidia and Lightroom. My laptop (Dell Vostro 172') is running Nvidia Geforce 96''M GS driver version 8.15.11.86'3.

Brian, I actually run Vista 64 bit SP2 at its default settings and have no real complaints. I am in the process of exporting 1485 .ARW files from a Sony a9'' 24.3MP camera to full size jpegs on my laptop. Apart from the slow writing to my 54''RPM hard drive all seems to be okay 7'% through the process.

FYI, my laptop graphics chipset is an nVidia GeForce 96''m GT with driver 7.15.11.7553 dated 5/13/2''8.

You are not alone!!!
I have the same problem using ASUS P6T motherboard with ATI VGA and Intel i7 92' 2,66GHz with 6GB Ram. It has crashed several times in Lightroom during export. I still looking for a solution but have not seen any yet!!! :(

Just curious, are you running 64 bit Vista? Are you also using LR2/Mogrify 2.x? I am trying to get as much info as to the things that are the same and what is different. Thanks for your info!

Soli, welcome to the forum!

That's a hardware error - bad memory, if I'm not mistaken. Lightroom doesn't cause those errors, but it's very good at finding them. You need to talk to your computer manufacturer, or local computer shop, if you're not sure how to fix it. I'd guess you've got a bad stick of RAM there.

My Vista is 32 bit with Nvidia. The only time I can make LR crash( I really do not do it on purpose) is when I do multiple exports to Smugmug. Other than that, LR, Vista 32 and nvidia works fine. I found it frustrating dealing Dell tech support. It appears that Dell outsourced their support to India where I found them to be not very helpful.
