LR crashed in China

I just completed a trip to China. I have downloaded my images from my cards to the Epson P-5'''. Then, as a double back-up, I transferred the images from the Epson to my laptop. About 1/2 way into my trip, I tried to import images but when I got the import window, LR was not responding- froze up. I repeated the process and got the same result. I asked some of the other members of the photo group(they use LR) but they had no idea. So, I ended up borrowing someone's USB card reader. I was able to import images from the card reader without any problems. Any thoughts?

Now that you are home, can you use a card reader to transfer your images from the cards directly to the laptop, completely bypassing the Epson? Then try to import these images into a LR catalog. This might help you determine if the Epson did anything to your files.

Nik: I was trying to import images from the Epson to my laptop thereby having at least two copies.

Ken: yes, the last part of the trip- I can use my card reader to bypass the Epson.

Bob,

If I am understanding you correctly, then it sounds like the problem is with the Epson unit. If you are still on your trip, I would use the card reader, download to the laptop and then import. Troubleshoot when you return from China.

I am back. So, I will play around with the Epson tonight or tomorrow to see what is going on.

I'm not very familiar with the Epson reader but I have had issues with battery operated stuff after it (and the batteries) have been subjected to the cold for example in the hold of a plane.....

I always plug-in the power on the Epson when I transfer the files from the Epson to the LR. In fact, I am doing this at this moment. But, in this case, I am transferring images to my desktop without any problems. I do not know if problem could be my laptop since that was an issue in China. If I have enough free time, I can try to transfer images from the Epson to the LR on my laptop and see if I get the same stupid message- LR not responding!

Today, I went ahead and downloaded images from the Epson to the laptop. The only difference is that I have upgraded the laptop to 2.5( vs 2.4 in China). The first files downloaded without any problems. The second one- I did have a "hiccup." On the import dialog, I got the same message- LR is not responding. But, this time, I let it sat there for five minutes then it finally responded and downloaded. Any ideas what is happening here????

So far, it has been one hour and forty-five minutes. 178 photos have been copied and imported. Talk about sloooooooooooow. I think I am about 9'% done basing on the bar in the left hand corner. This is not normal. Right???

I bought a generic USB card reader. I downloaded images directly from the card to the laptop(LR) I think it took about 25 minutes to download 2'' RAW files which is more reasonable than the two hour job from the Epson to the laptop. So, I guess I can blame the slowness on the Epson not LR.

No, it not possible to re-format the Epson. But, going back to the original problem- why would LR freeze up on import( message- LR is not responding)? What factors can cause this?

More seriously tough, probably communication latency with the Epson. Out of Lightroom, can you exchange files in a breeze with it?

I think there is something wrong with the Epson. I have no problems downloading 4GB card but the Epson will not download my 8GB cards. I no issues moving files from the Epson to the desktop but have encountered import problems using the laptop(moving images from the Epson to the laptop). The LR's speed on the desktop is fine- no issues. I did not test the speed on the laptop because I did not have time to do any manipulations during the trip.

This is my third major trip using the Epson P5''' and my first time encountering problems. I will have some down time before other major trip. So, I will delete all files from the Epson and will duplicate my work flow at home. If I have problems, it will be here at home vs being in another country.
