Question or Description of Problem:
Has anyone found any information on the new Lightroom Process version? Adobe has rather quietly updated to version 4 but I can find no details as to what changes have been made or how it will affect already processed images (if at all).

The new version is needed for the new Range Mask and Auto Mask features. Apart from that, it does not change anything else to your images so switching from Version 3 to Version 4 will be invisible.

But the masking is available with the old (version 3 2012) process as well, so I don't think that is it.

No, Range Mask is not available in the old version. As soon as you apply Range Mask, the process version is automatically updated to 4. And yes, that is the sole reason for the new process version.

In the new version 4, the "regular" masking is different as well, as it changes the sequence in which it is applied relative to noise reduction.

So an image will be quietly upgraded from 3-4 if you have NOT used masking in it, and do other edits, OR if you edit and use the new range masking, otherwise it will generally stay at 3 to preserve the existing masking.

Personally I cannot see any difference in regular masking in 3 or 4, but there is a minute difference and Adobe is trying to be careful in preserving it by not upgrading images where you used it automatically.
