LR can't find printer profiles after transfer to new iMac

I bought a new iMac and had the Apple store transfer everything from the old iMac. Unfortunately they changed the name of my user directory so I had to update the default library directory path to get my Lightroom 1.4.1 to properly find my library. Everything works fine now except printer profiles. I can still see the ones I had previously chosen in LR, but they don't work (prints are horrible). When I choose "other" to see "Choose Profiles to appear in Custom Profile popup" the list is empty, so I don't think LR is finding the profiles. They are available on the new iMac in the right place (Libraries/Printers/etc....) and I can use them fine from both iPhoto and the LR 3 beta (installed totally separately). So my theory is that LR 1.4.1 is looking for the profiles on the old user directory path that doesn't exist on the new iMac. I'd like to change the path but cannot find a place to set the path where it looks for profiles. Does anybody have any idea how to update the profile path?

I plan to upgrade to LR 3 when it comes out, so I wonder if this will solve the problem. I tried upgrading to the 1.4.1 version I already have, hoping it might overwrite the path defaults, but that didn't work. Any help would be appreciated because this problem is driving me crazy.

jcarpo, welcome to the forums: I'll yield the floor to our Mac gurus, this subject is highly OS dependent.

While you're waiting for meaningful input, you might like to take a moment and update your forum user profile to reflect the system setup info you mention in your post. It's quite helpful for potential responders, as Lr has some variances between versions and OSs.

Hi jcarpo, welcome to the forum!

I would have thought that LR would have followed the OS paths, but there's one thing I'd try before I scratched my head too much further - the preferences file.

Go to Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Preferences / com.adobe.Lightroom2.plist, move it somewhere else, and restart LR and see if that does the trick.

Thanks Victoria. I tried your suggestion (with the version 1 plist file) and it definitely recreated that preferences file upon re-entering Lightroom, but unfortunately the list of printer profiles when I choose "other" is still totally empty. I don't understand either why it doesn't follow the usual OS path. I actually installed the Lightroom 3 beta separately just so I could test this problem from scratch and LR3 beta finds the profiles fine. I'm wondering if I will need to totally uninstall Lightroom V1.4.1 and then reinstall Lightroom to fix the problem. I could wait until I upgrade to LR3 when it comes out, but I doubt upgrading on top of what I have will solve the problem. Let me know if you have any other ideas. I never would have known to do what you suggested so I really appreciate anything you suggest.

That thread looks perfect. Looks promising to copy the profiles somewhere else and then copy them back. I am swamped this week at work so I'll try it over the weekend and let you know how it goes. Thanks so much.

Tip: try copying them to a drive that is formatted with FAT32, like a usb pen drive and then copy them back. This may sound odd but it will strip all the security permission info from the files when they are written to the FAT32 file system. Then when you copy them back they will get the default ownership and permissions for your Mac account re-appended.

This is what I do Victoria not knowing exactly the Mac OS behavior on this.

For example, in Windows, if you drag'n drop a file, original permissions will follow but if you select copy/paste from the menu or contextual menu, permissions will adapt to the destination. Is there something similar on Mac?

Copy does the basically the same on the Mac too. There are other special 'bits' that can get set though and these can cause issues. Copying to a FAT32 FS will strip those.

Unfortunately I have not been able to solve the problem. I copied the profiles everywhere, including to profile directories under library/printers/canon and library/colorsync (both user directory and root). Every time the profiles show-up immediately in my LR 3 Beta but do not appear in my LR 1.4.1. I just can't get them to appear in LR 1.4.1 which is where all my photos are. Also, I can't try the other suggestion to switch between 32 bit and 64 bit with LR 1.4.1 because that doesn't appear to be an option like it is with the LR 3 Beta (and apparently LR 2, from the posts I see here). I guess LR 1.4.1 is just running in 32 bit.

At this point I am going to give-up and wait to upgrade to LR 3 when it comes out, hoping this will solve the problem. Perhaps there are simply issues with running LR 1.4.1 on snow leopard. I never paid to upgrade to LR 2 because 1.4.1 always did what I needed it to do on my old Tiger OS iMac. I'm curious as to whether I will still need to pay the LR 2 upgrade fee in order to upgrade to LR 3. If I knew for sure this would be the case, then I would just pay now to upgrade to LR 2 to see if it solved this problem. Anybody know? I wonder how soon LR 3 will be released.

In the meantime, I have a work-around by developing to JPGs, importing into iphoto and printing using profiles from there. (I prefer to do that rather than use my LR 3 Beta for printing because LR 3 beta will go away soon.)

In case anybody brings up this thread in a search, I wanted to report back that this problem was solved when I upgraded to Lightroom 3. The bottom line is that the last version made of Lightroom 1 just doesn't work properly on Mac OS 1'.6 (snow leopard). After I posted this issue, I discovered other minor issues with Lightroom 1 on my new iMac, like when I rotated photos, they rotated in the wrong direction. So just don't even waste your time trying to get Lightroom 1 to work properly on OS 1'.6 snow leopard.
