LR can not open files

I have had Lightroom for under a year, I downloaded, it no CD, it would not open, many times, went through a diagnostic and it finally behaved. Now after downloading the new version all my images from December '7 to now will not open, when in develop mode a notice comes up "The file could not be opened"
This has just occured within the last few days. So do we go through the trash and reinstall to version 1.3 or does anyone know a fix.
I have also had trouble when loading images, I take low dpi (72) but physically large panoramas,digitally stitched, some up to 2''"x5'", 25 mb, or 11395 X 4''8. I use a Leica D Lux 3, point and shoot in a 16:9 mode, is it the volume ie mb or the physical size that prevents me from loading.

Lightroom is working on a limit of 1'''' x 1'''' pixels at the present. Screens do not know what "dpi" mean...

Are they going to increase that? I make panos also, and they are almost always bigger than that in both dimensions.

Yes, version 2.' (and the beta currently available) increases the limit to 3',''' pixels.

"The file cannot be opened" is usually due to it being 'missing' from where LR expects to find it. If you look in Grid mode, does it have a little question mark on it?

No, these are the ones that are too big. The message is "too big"
http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=4495 is 11244x12564. It's 2' images stitched together. Photoshop opens it, but since I need to make it into a TIFF to get it into gigagpan and that's 25'mb, then I can't see the final image in Bridge, either.

I guess I'll go ahead and try out the beta on some of these. I generally only want the kind of fine development controls lightroom has to work on these. Helicon can work on these,too.

By reverting to version 1.3, I regained access to my files, now they all open but got confused with the Beta version as it did not override the earlier Lightroom, for me it's a standalone new application with no inheritance from original library. Victoria Bampton has said that the file size has increased to 3',''' pixels is this greater than 1',''' x 1','''

a. LR 2.' beta version is not an update and not yet in a finalized version, its there for trial and comment/suggestions. So yes it will not interfere with your other installed version. The "read me" file that comes with the download gives the relative information and suggested caution you should apply if you use the "beta" release.

In beta 2 I'm still getting corrupted message on some of them. It think there is a bug lurking here in terms of error handling. I've had problems with TIFF files in other contexts where it turns out that the program that created the TIFF used a different set of tags or something. The error message ought to point out that the TIFF tagging is not recognized by LR...
