LR backup

I always backup LR 2.5 every time after I use it, however after 5 days non-use when I opened LR it defaulted to the first day I installed it. I lost all my collections and attributes and identity plate, all I had were the original folders I imported the first day, (all greyed out). I still have my backups but they will not open. When I click on a backup I get message " Windows cannot open this file : Lightroom 2 Catalog.Ircat. I am still backing up every day but cannot open yesterdays backup. I am running Widows XP.

Has anyone had this problem or does anyone have an answere please.

Relax. It doesn't seem to be a big problem. It just seem that a corruption occured in Windows with the association between Lightroom and the .lrcat file type. From the dialog box you got in your screenshot, select "Choose program from a list" and navigate where "Lightroom.exe" is. Probably under "Program Files/Adobe/... and put a check mark on "Always use this program to open this file type" before clicking OK.

Also, avoid opening a backup directly and make a copy of one first if you want to open one.

Thank you Denis, problem solved but can't help but wonder how the problem arose, is something corrupt in my system?

Not anymore at least. Maybe another program was used trying to open that file type without success removing the proper association? Not sure but you will be ok now.
