LR and Capture NX

Has anyone tried to use Capture NX as the outside photo processor? I think its quite easy to use and results are very good. I am delighted with LR to manage the workflow and the library.... but for detailed photo improvement Capture NX, i think its just as good or better than LR or Photoshop. Thanks in advance!

I use both Lightroom and Capture. I very often start with Capture and then finish up and convert/upload to flickr with Lightroom.

I, too, use Lightroom and NX, and I think it's an excellent combination. Since starting to use the two, together, I've found that Photoshop is, more or less, redundant for me, as the selection brushes in NX do most of the things which I would normally have done in Photoshop.

At one time I thought that Qimage was the only app with a better print facility than Lightroom but I now find that the print from Capture NX renders slightly more detail than Lightroom... it's very subtle but the difference is there.

Do you both transfer all your photos from your Nikon to Capture, and then after processing, move them to LR?

I have a slightly complicated system that involves downloading all my images to my laptop to be sorted and catalogued. From there the "chosen few" go three ways - they are copied to an external HD for archiving, a copy is also burned to DVD and then they are moved to my desktop for processing.

I tend to use Lightroom for "global processing" and Capture NX for any images that may require a fair bit of "local processing" (images that would, in the past, have been handled by Photoshop). Lens distortion and colour aberration I leave to NX, as I figure that Nikon know Nikkor lenses, and their individual characteristics, better than anyone.

Makes sense what you do, bur does LR do the whole process? Do you just download all your photos to LR, and then decide on the "chosen few" -- do you erase all the other ones? -- and then within the "chosen bunch" in LR, send out to Capture those that require "local processing" as an external editor? ... but then do you keep the changes made in LR .... or you go back to the processing the original photo?

The images are evaluated on the laptop and the decision as to which app to use for the different images is made there and then (although nothing is actually "set in stone" - as in all aspects of life, flexibility is the keyword), so, by the time they reach the PC, I'm 99% sure of which image goes to which app.

I do have occassion to pass images between the two apps and ,when that happens, I keep the changes, but that's the beauty of RAW, isn't it... I can go back to the original anytime I like.

Only the "chosen few" are kept, anything else is deleted

I import to Lightroom. Then I just use (right click on image) "Show In Explorer"... then I just click on that file (NEF/RAW) which automaticly opens in Capture. I then (usually) save my edits in a TIFF file in Capture, then import (the edited picture (TIFF)) to Lightroom.

Why not just set up Capture as an external editor, and then use the "Edit in Capture" function (alt-control-E, I think, on Windows)? Seems a lot more straightforward than your approach.

Er... I am assuming you mean to include a smiley and not a link to the graphic of the smiley?

It's rather fast actually (my approach). I'll have to turn of Lightroom anyway, because of memory. But I actually just found out about this external editor thingy after I wrote my last post. :)
