So I've downloaded LR 3 and will use it alongside my 'live' LR 2.5 until it's released just to get a feel for it. I like the new import feature straight way. Much more flexibility and I like the look of it too. I of course love the Watermark feature that many have wanted for a good while now too.

One thing I'm a bit disappointed with is that it still appears you can't use Stacks in categories. I really hoped that would make it into this release.

Couple of other things I've noticed really quickly is the additional slider for noise reduction (Edge Detail) and a much improved Vignetting effect with a 'style' feature that appears to be a drop down list (although it seems greyed out on mine and defaulted to "Highlight Priority"), a contrast slider, and a sub-section for Grain (Amount, Size, and Roughness), which incidentally I'm v. happy about.

Finally there's a Publish Services section in the Library Module which currently has two services listed - Hard Drive and Flickr. I'm guessing this will be part of the new SDK so that people can add to those services and could be a real neat feature.

What's the speed of the develop module preview rendering times and in particular the adjustment sliders like compared to 2.X?
For the most part (and I've only had a very brief go) the speed seems more or less the same. So you still get that bit of lag between moving the slider and seeing the updated preview. One thing that I did notice was very much quicker was the gradient tool. In 2.5 on my MBP I found that to be a really jittery tool. Very smooth in the beta.

I'll be doing more with it over the coming weeks and will get more of a feel for the performance then. First impressions though are good.

Downloaded, installed: HOW DO I GET MY LIBRARY FROM LR2 INRO LR3? c

By waiting until it's recommended - when LR3 is fully released.

In LR2, you can currently save the metadata back to the files, and you can then import them into LR3.

Thanks,

Fair enough.

Re: LR 3 beta - very first impressions File compatability LR2/LR3?

Just wondering if work done in LR2 acn be imported into LR3 Beta and will files modified in LR3b ( I know that no one can say for sure) be compatible with the final released product? I think I remember that files done in LR2 beta had some problems in final release product... or was that LR 1?

So I imported into L3b some archived files which had been adjusted in L2. I notice that they still have their L2 adjustments applied but a small warning triangle appears above the histogram. Hovering over that gives you the option to update to the latest 'process version'. What this suggests is that you can import previously adjusted L2 files and even work with them, but for best results and to unlock some of the new develop options you need to update to the L3 process version.
As for whether files edited in L3b will be compatible with the released version - I couldn't say but I would assume the worst and say no. I really wouldn't use the beta of any product for any serious work unless you're happy to accept you may lose that work at some point.

Thanks Loyd,

Given past beta to release cycles what might be a good guess as to how many months we might be out from release?

On that I have no idea as I was using Aperture the last time they had a beta for LR. The beta is valid until April next year and so I'm guessing this LR3 will be coming out around that time frame. Purely a guess though.

Thanks... It will be good to try out and submit feedback to Adobe, but for actual work... not so much.

That's because it's set to the old process version - click on the warning triangle in the histogram panel to make the new tools available.

I guess you need a 64 bit OS. I tried the 32 bit version and found it to be much slower than 2.5. For me it is completely unusable...uninstalled.
It's an early beta version, so performance is yet to be tweaked further.

Oh that's a shame. My 2.3 is just on the edge of usability with my current setup. Will skip this unless I get a new machine in the meantime.
I would not concern myself about application speed at this point. First, this is Beta1 and secondly, most beta applications contain tremendous amounts of Debug code to give pertinant information about program faults so they can be found and fixed. This debug code will slow an application down. Eventually, two things will happen. The application itself will be tunes and the debug code will be removed probably in a release candidate.

Seems stable enough but misnamed. Should be LR 2.6. Doesn't seem to contain enough significant content upgrades to justify a new version number. Missing things I had hoped would be included: soft proofing the the ability to composite layers, ie. panoramas, exposure composites, focus composites, etc. Maybe these are still in the works and Adobe will surprise us.

I have LR3 Beta running on a MBP with Snow Leopard. I don't see any speed issues; response is almost instantaneous. Still experimenting, but I can't get the slide show to automatically set slide durations in order to match the music. I thought that was a new feature?

Scott, it's not feature complete.

Peter, select your track and then click on the Duration label, and the slide times will automatically adjust to fit.

Have they fixed the problem with keywords?

I have long ago asked Adobe make sure that the keyword suggestions do not duplicate words in the current keyword list. It would be a huge improvement. I often have half of the suggested keywords being duplicates of the ones I already have at hand in my current keyword set - making a good feature much less useful than it could be. And it should be really, really easy to fix.

Do not have the time to install the beta myself, so just hoping someone more willing to experiment will take a quick look at this. :-[

my first impression was what has changed and what is new? ................then i imported a few files and hey, what a great import box. I've now got a couple of days off so hopefully I can have a good play. From past beta's it has always been worth not doing anything that you want on final files as there could well be a change in the final product that renders older adjustments and effects useless.

There's a list on my blog Andrew

I watched several of the 16 minute videos on the Adobe Labs page, and one of them addressed this. I think that warning triangle is informing you that you by updating to the latest "process version", you will be using the demosaic algorithm in the new 3.' version, which is supposed to provide better raw processing. I think if you choose to do that, you cannot go back to the preceding algorithm. For new images, it won't be a problem, but I think for those who fully processed images on the basis of the other raw demosaic process, you might have results you won't like. It would be interesting for someone to test the effects on a few images they processed "to perfection" in LR 2.x

ML, perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but in the Develop > Settings menu, there's an option to switch back and forth between the two Process Versions. So I don't believe you've irreversibly committed yourself by choosing the Process Version 2 (Lr3b) option. I believe the warning icon is to alert you that you have a photo processed in the 'old style' selected.

The differences between the 2 are reported to be confined to sharpening, noise reduction and post-crop vignette.

Not the most obvious way of making the slides fit to the music. I think it needs a check box next to duration saying fit slides to music.

Andrew, agreed, I've put the feature request in.
