LR 2.6 seems to stop - "checking for Duplicates" in Merging Catalogs

I was following the procedure to merge two catalogs outlined on page 212 of Martin Evenings book in LR 2.6. First catalog went in fine. Second catalog (28,''' images or so) seems to have imported and stopped. So I canceled and tried again. Second time again started and this time got as far as checking for duplicate photos and never completes. The computer is not hung and taskmanager shows lightroom running. Its been 9 hours and it is still doing nothing more that I can see. Is there some way to tell if its just time to kill this, or do something else here? This is my first time merging catalogs so I don't know what is normal. Win XP Pro is the OS here with 3+ gig ram

If you find it getting stuck on checking for duplicates, cancel the operation and try again. I get this from time to time but it usually works fine on the second attempt.

Well I tried multiple restarts including attempts after the computer was taken from a cold boot and nothing started other then LR. Still is not getting passed the searching for duplicates problem as described above. Not going to be my lucky day I guess

Well then there is something odd in that catalog. Make a copy of it to work with, then try optimising it first.Next step will be to export from it as a catalog (without negative files), do this in chunks yo try and find the error file. When you have exported a section then import that section catalog into the Master Catalog. This may work and you will have no problems (larger imports can be more problematic) or you may end up narrowing it down to a specific folder and file. If you find a specific file that will not import report back.I've done this and although painful the end result is worth the effort! ;)

This might be slightly off-topic, but I can't seem to find an answer to this on the forum - I've searched the forum, but can't find a satisfactory answer to this. I recently returned from holiday and, on a daily basis, transferred all the pictures I took onto a laptop. The catalogue name for this was 'Holiday 2''9' and I exported this catalogue to the My Documents folder. When I got home I then imported that catalogue onto my desktop computer. The result is, of course, that I now have my original catalogue (the Lightroom 2 Catalogue) and the new one (the 'Holiday 2''9' catalogue). As I really don't want to keep switching catalogues, is there a way I can bring the 'Holiday 2''9' one into the Lightroom one?

You need to import your 'Holiday 2''9' catalog into your original catalog. It's one of the three import choices.

This is the problem I have. As far as I can see, there are three import options under the file menu - Import Photos from Disk, Import Photos from Device and Import from Catalog. I imported my 'Holiday 2''9' catalog using the Import from Catalog option but it becomes a separate catalog. What am I doing wrong?

What I've been doing is this -

With the normal catalog open, I went to File>Import from Catalog. I then found the new catalog folder and was presented with three choices, Holiday Photos Previews.lrdata, My Pictures, Holiday Photos.lrcat. I selected the last one, as I assumed that was the catalog and then was presented with the Import from Catalog dialog box with all the thumbnails. I then clicked OK and the import process began. However the new catalog is just that - a new catalog. It shows up separately in the catalog list as Holiday Photos.lrcat

Hmmm, the method sounds right, the result, wrong. Just so I'm clear (not much hope of that), why isn't that conflicting with the existing Holiday Photos.lrcat? Anyone else see what I'm missing?

To look at it another way - if I go to File>Open Recent, I can choose between Holiday Photos.lrcat and Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat. Is there a way of merging these, or dragging one into the other?

Go to File/Open Recent and select 'Lightroom 2 Catalog'. Now, look to see if your holiday photos are available. If so, LR has done what you asked. When it imports a catalog into another catalog, it does not delete the first catalog. Cheers,

I've just discovered that they are available after all - but only if I select 'All Photographs' in the 'Catalog' panel on the left hand side. I was expecting to see them in their original folder. Is there a way of doing that?

Roy, What happens if you highlight one of the holiday photos and then select the menu item: Photo/Show Folder in Library? The Folders panel on the left side of the screen (in Library Grid mode) should open to the original folder for that image.

It looks like you might have cracked it! I right-clicked as you suggested and the folder appeared in the folder list. It seems, therefore, that I now have the answer. My thanks to everyone who helped with this problem.

One further point - as I said earlier, my importing procedure was this -With the normal catalog open, I went to File>Import from Catalog. I assume that My Pictures contains the original photos, but what about lrdata? Are these imported automatically with lrcat?

The .lrdata contains the previews associated with the similarly named .lrcat so this is definitely the .lrcat which is the catalog.

Importing the lrcat will do it Roy.
