Call it odd but the color of my images is vastly different in Lightroom than when I load them in CS3.
Both of my displays (LaCie 324 and a Dell 2''5) are calibrated and show virtually identical color in Photoshop however when looking at the same image in Lightroom, the image on the LaCie has a slight cyan/green tint and the shadows are blocked up and look terrible, almost as if the screen isn't calibrated. But the image on the Dell does not change and does look correct.

Both displays are calibrated using X-Rite calibration hardware and I verified the calibration using an older Monaco Optix brand tool.

This is using OSX 1'.5.6, CS3 extended and LR 2.3

And when I export the image from LR to edit in PS, it looks fine. When I save and LR updates the exported image it looks blocked up again. I'm competely sure their are no settings being automaticly applied by LR as well.

Edit: It has done this for a long time but more recently it seems to be worse. Also, this occurs for all types of images (8 or 16bit Tiff, JPEG, RAW).

Welcome to Lightroom Forums.

Does the white part of your histogram look white, or does it also show the cyan/green tint?

If it is tinted, then your monitor profile is corrupt, and recalibrating should help. It sounds like you've already recalibrated, so that's probably not it, but I thought I'd check.

If that doesn't do it, please post screen shots so we can see what you mean. Ideally, include histograms in the screen shots.

Could this be related to the colour space you have set in CS3 ?

I mostly use Adobe RGB as the working space in Photoshop. The LaCie is calibrated for that space. (it is capable of displaying about 96% of aRGB I believe) Though when working with graphics for posting online I do change the working space to sRGB. The Dell display is only sRGB but both match well in the color ranges that overlap.

Yea I thought the calibration may be off but I've recalibrated and it still shows up incorrect but only in Lightroom.

Whites are perfectly white and neutral tones are dead on as well.

I'll try and do a screen capture to see if it shows the problem or not. That should be interesting.

Alright here we go... Four screen shots, two done on each monitor. One set taken directly in Lightroom. And one set from CS3 using the same RAW file loaded using Camera RAW using the same settings as Lightroom. Each file name should be self explanatory. (LaCie_LR2 was taken from the primary display in Lightroom)

For grins, I also exported the file from LR2 to a JPEG and opened that in CS3 which looked exactly the same as the NEF I opened using Camera RAW. (I overlayed the file exported from LR2 and the NEF opened in CS3 and not a single pixel shifted color or density.)

The files were all converted to sRGB for web display but they should still show the problem.

Yes, I know the dog is cute. (His name is Nikon.) And yes, I know the picture isn't well exposed but the dark brindle gives me a good area of varied shadows to show the problem clearly.

Nobody has any idea?

I am not sure and would need time to consider the situation., which I don't have available at the moment as I am up to my ears with work, sorry.
However in Safari on my Mac, they all look the same!!

To help us help you could you please take a moment to fill in your signature in the "userCP' that is found in the nav-bar at the top left of the page - thanks.

They don't have your original filenames attached, so I can't see which is which, but the right hand one definitely has slightly blocked shadows. Which is that?

OT, not solving the OP problem, I'm seeing a tooltip with the filename(s) when pointing to the forum thumbnails (Opera 9.64, Chrome(most recent) and IE8. Not in Safari4 beta. )

Interestingly enough, if logged out of the forum, all you see is the image filenames, and not the thumbnails. Once logged in, you see the thumbnails, and not the file names. Except as above....

I have the same problem... help !!
My Lightroom is unuseable. It gives a strong greenish cast to all images. If I make an image balanced in Lightroom, it appears with a strong reddish cast in all the other programs.
I am sure that the problem is in Lightroom because I have tried opening some gray scale images such as those that you can find by searching for "gray scale" in Google.
They look correct in all my programs except in Lightroom, where they appear of a strong greenish gray.
Help !! :-(

P.S. I am on Lightroom 2.2 64Bit 523352
I have sRGB as monitor profile.
like I said all my other programs display colours correctly.

Without calibrating your monitor you are pretty much wasting your time trying to get these images to match. LR is colour managed, many other programs (including most) browsers are not colour managed.

Calibrating your monitor is the 1st and most important step to colour management :!:

Orio, welcome to the forum!

When you say you have sRGB as your monitor profile, where are you checking that? Just double checking the obvious, corrupted profiles are usually the cause of massive colour mismatch like that. Check the histogram in Lightroom - is the light section white/grey, or does that also have a colour cast?

PhotoArtKC, I have recollections of an old thread on the U2U on this very subject. I'll see if I can find it. Question - is it a Matrix profile or LUT based? Lightroom doesn't work well with LUT profiles, but have a look in the calibration software and see if there's a setting to switch.

The screenshots go:

Dell CS3, Dell LR2, LaCie CS3, LaCie LR2

The LaCie is my primary display and the Dell is a secondary display for use mostly with Lightroom. The Dell shows the same color in Lightroom and CS3 apps where as the LaCie and Dell match nearly perfect in CS3 apps but in Lightroom the LaCie looks much more high contrast in the shadows mostly. Three of the four should match great, the last image should be the only one to show the blocked up shadows.

I use a ColorMunki Photo to calibrate the display but I do know that it does calibrate the screens internal white balance and brightness/contrast controls using DDC. I've also used a different calibrator and software to manually calibrate both the display controls and the ICC profile with the same results. The LaCie 324 uses an internal 1'bit LUT but that should not matter to Lightroom as it is part of the displays internal control.

FYI off subject, Firefox 3 can be set up to display color managed files properly. Their is a setting you must change but their is a special command you must type to access it unless they have changed that since I installed it.

That's exactly what I'm seeing. The bad thing is, I don't have the ability to choose a Matrix or LUT profile. It sounds like Adobe really should fix this on their end as it doesn't occur when I open the RAW file using exactly the same settings in CS3.

Post it on the U2U forum and hopefully Jao or Bragit may answer with a bit more information. I seem to remember from a really really really old U2U thread that LR uses the OS's colour management (ICM or ColorSync), whereas PS uses the Adobe Color Engine, and that Aperture shows (or did at that time) the same problems with LUT profiles. That said, you might want to do a search on the U2U as it was probably in the LR1 early days, and memory might be wrong.

I just thought I would post what I found out for anyone who may come across this problem later.

After many tests including multiple re-profiles using both the ColorMunki and older Monaco Optix devices, the profile created by the Monaco colorimeter did not have the problem with the blacks. (However the profile was less accurate.) Where as the profile created by the ColorMunki LOOKS great, in Lightroom it wasn't fully compatable. As it turns out, the problem is a mix of Lightroom not supporting V4 LUT profiles (simpler V2 LUT's are fine which is why the profiles from the Monaco work fine) and the fact that the ColorMunki (and many other X-Rite devices) create V4 LUT's by default.

After figuring out the problem, I called X-Rite to see if they had any suggestions. It turns out they already have a fix in the works that will allow the user to pick what type of profile they would like to use. (for compatibilty until all apps properly support V4 profiles)

Same problem as Orio

Hi to all (my first post),
I'm getting precisely the same problem as Orio, and it occurred today: an awful green cast in all pictures, RAWs or jpgs. The luminance part of the histogram is green. Also, all exposures are about 2 stops dark. I have read the posts alluding to LUT issues, and have a feeling that that is part of the problem, but there is a strong clue which is probably the cause of my problem: last night I changed to a new graphics card (from an Nvidia 86''GTS to an ATI Radeon HD467'). The problem has suddenly occurred after that. Very importantly, it only occurs in LR2.3; I have perhaps a couple of dozen graphics editing and browsing programs on my computer, and all of them are displaying images (RAW & jpg) properly; only LR is having a disaster.

cheers, Kris

PhotoArtKC, that's a great bit of investigation, and thanks for posting back what you found out.

Kris, how do you calibrate your monitor? Simply recalibrating usually fixes the green cast issue - that's usually a simple corrupted profile, whereas LUT issues usually tend to notice in the blocked shadows. LR uses the profile differently to other programs, which is why the others are fine.

Thanks Victoria. Actually I don't currently have a monitor profile. I did have one, but it became corrupted, and my spyder is lost in my storage shed lol. But if I'm understanding this correctly, any colour profile is going to affect the display of images in all programs, not just LR; but my problem is totally confined to LR. All other programs are displaying images well.
However, I'm close to solving the problem after several hours of rebooting last night: it's the ATI graphics card driver clashing in some way with LR. As previously mentioned, I installed a new ATI graphics card (467') and the latest Catalyst driver "suite" (9.4) yesterday. To track down if that was the problem I uninstalled it, then ran LR under the generic Windows driver. All was fine; no strong green cast and exposures fine. Then I reinstalled the ATI Catalyst suite. Problem came back. Thinking (hoping) it was to do with the applets in teh suite, I uninstalled just the Catalyst Control Centre, and rebooted. Nope. So that just leaves the actual driver. Today I'm starting to work back through ATI drivers looking for one which will work with LR2.3. (As to why it clashes with LR, I have no idea; but I've reported the problem to AMD feedback.)

Victoria, you are right after all . It is the profile. I just created a new one in CS and applied it, then opened LR. Even without a reboot the problem has been fixed. I didn't realise just how sensitive LR is to colour profiles. I bow to your superior knowledge :D. (The only remaining puzzle is why LR worked fine under the generic Windows driver; but I don't care really. LR is working again.) Thanks a lot for your help.
