LR 2.3 is running very slowly ...

It seems I have a constant battle trying to get LR to run at an acceptable speed. often times LR will get "hung" up (not responding) for minutes on end. The worst part is when I go through a shoot to weed out the good from the bad - it takes forever. I am not blaming LR it is probably my Pc but after I have generated 1:1 previews (which took forever) and when I try to view a photo at 1:1 or use the compare feature or go to the develop module it takes a long time. i get mesmerized by the words "files loading". It can literally take minutes to get a file to load 1:1 and going through 5'' photos takes me days!!!!!


I optimize my catalog daily and defrag my computer about every week or so

i have cleared out my temp files. i shoot raw with a 4'D

i bought a new internal hard drive which is filling up fast but i still have 4'% free space on my C: drive where the lightroom program files are located and I am down to about 15% (which I am constantly trying to increase) on my E drive where my catalog and pictures are.

iAs a side note, It seems whenever I get about 1',''' photos in my catalog LR really starts to slow down. I have 8''' now and LR is running really slow. I would like to keep all the photos together if at all possible.

I am running xp service pack 3, I have 2 gigs of RAM and a celron 1.6Ghz processor. I know I need to get a new laptop but right now that isn't possible. I am in SE Asia and will be doing a lot of shooting in the next few weeks and I need to be able to quickly go through and edit my photos so I can spend more time behind the camera and not in front of the computer which I am doing now. Any tips, hints or advice will be greatly appreciated.

David are you really still running 1.3.1?? If so you should upgrade to 1.4.1 or be really kind to yourself and splash out on 2.3.

I know I found LR1 bogged down my system after about 1'k files but LR2 has no problems with 4'k on my bottom end Mac!! There were substantial changes between LR1 and 2 in the catalog.

no - I splashed out for 2.3.

One thing I am noticing now (maybe before also) is that the 1:1 previews load "fast" (actually much faster) in the library module than they do in the develop module. but my work flow is/was to go through my photos in the develop module flagging or rejecting and then making any necessary crops, adjustments to exposure ...

Thanks Victoria for your link.

I have changed the raw cache from the 1 gig default and downloaded and updated my video driver.

I will try the tips to speed up the develop module since that is where i am seeing the problem. One question, you mentioned in your speed up lightroom post "Ideally your catalog (and the previews alongside) will be on a different drive to the image files themselves". I have my catalog, previews and photos all on the same drive - my E drive on my internal hard drive. If i have space available on my C drive what is the best way to get the previews and catalogs over there? just simply use the move command?

Is the E-drive physically separate, or is it a partition on larger physical drive? If it's a partition, I don't believe you'll see much performance difference. When you saw the suggestion 'Ideally .... different drives', it should probably read 'Ideally .... different drive read/write heads'. While partitioning a drive provides a valuable organizational tool, it doesn't help performance, as the read/write electronics and logic is not duplicated.

If they are indeed separate drives, yes, you can just copy (that's safer than a move) the previews and catalogs over. (Once you're satisified they're safely copied, then you can delete the originals.) We all highly recommend good backups first tho'. Don't forget that Lr tries to remember the last locations of catalogs, so take time to verify that you're opening the catalogs in the new location. Moving your photo files is a teeny bit more complex, so if you're considering that, let us know.
