LR 2.3 freezes on import from CF reader

So I use "copy files to new location and import to LR" to move and catalogue files in LR 2.3.
Sometimes (more frequently it seems), the import will start and then the system will freeze half way through. It doesn't seem to be camera dependent (I use 4'Ds and 5DIIs) or CF card dependent (I use many and it's often more than one card).
Everything freezes, I cannot quit or force quit and I have to manually restart the computer. My catalogue will then be corrupt and I have to to open a back up catalogue.
I am on a Mac Pro running 1'.5.6, but the same thing happened on my imac also.
This is driving me nuts!
Can anyone help?

What card reader do you use?

Do you have it on a separate port or is it on a chain or a hub? Do you have any other firewire devices connected to the mac that are on?

It was on a hub connected to an external drive, but I have also tried it connected directly to the HD and it still jammed up.

External drive is on, but that's it.

Does it jam up at any particular point? I have just got a new external drive and that has messed up my connections. I had it replaced and all is ok now. Have you tried connection the camera up to transfer the pics, or can you try another card reader to try to eliminate the reader.

It's completely random. I tried one card with another reader (just a cheap USB reader and it worked fine), but it was waaay too slow.

I have to transfer large numbers of images so need something fairly fast.

I am now trying the lexar card reader with a different firewire cable. Here's hoping.....

Ok, so new cable, 8 cards load fine, including problem cards from earler, then number 9 jams twice. I don't get it.
