Lost Keywords LR1 to LR2

Hi all
i hope someone can help here. Last August, i upgraded LR1 to LR 2, always have kept up to date on upgrades. I realized after taking a LR class at NANPA last week that i had not been saving my metadata into the xmp sidecar which may have started my trouble. I did the upgrade as directed and realized a few months later that i had no keywords from my LR work. All the photos were there, but no keywords (over 1',''' images so this is a problem :(.

the instructor told me to be sure all my links were working for LR1 (opened the files in LR 1, fixed everything, saved the metadata, closed the program. Then opened LR2 and asked it to open the LR1 catalogue. It said it had upgraded it before, did i want to do that again. i said yes. so it did its thing, upgraded it i guess. Then i asked it to open the LR2 catalogue, and i sitll do not have keywords.

what do i do next to get the keywords into my LR2 catalogue? I am stumped.

I had actually done this fix, but no luck last time. So i tried again (had forgotten about this until your email-thanks), this time thinking that since i had saved the metadata it should work. No luck. it found 415 keywords, but i still have 1'K images without keywords . So i tried a few samples of their second manual fix, and nothing happened.

A couple of questions Joyce,
if you export a file from the LR1 catalog odes it contain the keywords if imported to a LR2 catalog?
Does update the metadata from file action bring in the keywords to the LR2 catalog??

Do both of these with one file to test......;)

hmmm..not sure what i am supposed to do. Do you mean hit the export button, and if so, what setting should it be at and how do i get it into LR2?

Yes, I would just select a file with keywords and export it as a jpeg to where ever. Then import that file to an LR2 Catalog, you may want to make a new one for this testing, and see if the keywords are imported.

Not saving metadata to xmp shouldn't have caused this problem. LR's catalog holds all of the data, regardless of whether you've also written to xmp. So either way, we're looking for a different source of the problem.

Another question for you, to join Geoff's investigation... if you look at the LR1 catalog in LR1 - are all of the keywords definitely correctly assigned there?

Thanks for the ideas, here are the results :(
Opened LR1 catalogue, all keywords are there. Picked a photo, exported it as a jpeg to my desktop. Closed LR1. Opened LR2, made a test catalogue, relaunched LR2, imported the jpeg. No key words. ??? I can see all the keywords for all files in LR1.

Ah Joyce this is a mystery.
1. Can you link us with a file exported from LR1 and a copy of the original please.
2. What happens if you start a new LR1 catalog and import a few files that are in another LR1 catalog and upgrade the new (test) one.
I'm thinking that your LR1 catalog may be the problem.

And thinking laterally, where are you looking in LR2 for the keywords....? It's probably a silly question, but these things are sometimes overlooked, so it's worth asking!

I would be happy to link whatever, but have no idea what you need. Am a bit of a novice with online stuff. Guess i will have to get better. Do you need me to send a jpeg file, to this adress or how do i make a link?

The keywords always show in the right hand side under keywords, all the photos i have added in LR2 have thier keywords in that spot. The LR1 files all show up in LR2 in thier correct folders. But in many cases if i want to work on a LR1 file, it will show with a question mark in the upper right hand corner. I can find the file on my hard drive but to work on it i often have to import it again, and maybe rename it since LR2 says it is already in the catalogue. If i open LR1 and its catalogue i see all the files, LR knows where they are and i could open and work on them. hope this helps and does not confuse further.

One suggestion made to me at the LR class (not by the instructor but by another knowledgable person, was to delete the previews that had question marks and even the LR files that did not have keywords and reimport them, but that would mean redoing the keywords, something i really do not want to do on 1'K images.

Send me one exported from your LR catalog, you can make it small and a copy of the original file that the export was made from. All from LR1.

Don't re-import! (This will, I think, be the topic of my next blog post, once I have a place to post it...)

In this case, click on that question mark and navigate to the new location of the file, to point lightroom to the new location. Then you're good to go. No need to re-import.

The same is true of folders in the folder list that have a question mark. Right-click on the folder and choose "Find missing folder", and navigate to the new location so Lightroom knows where to find the folder.

Thanks for the thought, Mark. However, those files that have question marks, if I click on them, aand locate the original it will tell me it is already assigned to another photo in the catalogue and will NOT recognize it. And the question mark remains.

I think there are 2 issues here, the lack of keywords (Geoff i will email a jpeg, but the original RAW file is 25 mb, can i email that also?). This is one issue.

the other issue is that some of those files without keywords also have a question mark next to them and will not be found by LR2.

Joyce, email me the jpeg to start with, the raw is probably too large to email. Is it still an NEF or is it a DNG?

Right, because you've already re-imported, right?

You need to delete the re-imports from the catalog (select them in Grid and press the delete key), then do the question-mark thing.
