This may have come up before but as I'm new to this forum I only looked at the last 5' or 6' postings. My laptop is not normally connected to the Internet, due to problems on our home wireless network. However while on vacation some family members used my laptop to check the net. When I got home and started to load my latest pictures I found that I had lost all my links to my Lightroom files on my external hard drive. I can reload the pictures (very time consuming) but what really bothers me is that all my keywords have disappeared as well as my Metadata info. The drive letters are correct. I experienced this problem previously before I lost the Internet connection at home. Previously I had wondered if one of the automatic software updates was interfering with Lightroom, though I'm not using anything special for printer or security software. Any ideas / thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Re-importing is definitely NOT the way to go. Seems like you have already discovered the disadvantages of re-importing.

When you say "The drive letters are correct", it really doesn't matter if you think the drive letters are correct, it matters where Lightroom thinks the files are. So ... in Lightroom, right-click on the top-level folder in the Folder panel over there on the right and select Update Folder Location and point Lightroom to your photo directories. Problem solved. (Of course, if you already re-imported, none of this will help unless you have a backup of your catalog from before the problem happened).

As to why this happened, I don't think it has anything to do with your internet connect, printer drivers or anything else. This usually happens why you move or rename your photos or folders using Windows, so stop doing that! It would be helpful for you to read about how Lightroom works, see The Lightroom Starter Kit at http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/index.php?topic=6393.'

Paige: - thanks , I'll try your recommendation today. As to your idea re cause, you may be correct. Though I don't re-name or move files in Windows, while we were on vacation family were using my computer not only to access the Net but they were looking at my photos of the wedding we were at and someone may have done something.

Hi,

Can I just take issue (a little :)) with the 'stop doing that!' remark? In a small way it's a bit like saying 'crossing the street can be dangerous, so stop doing that!'.....simplistic I know, but the point is that - if one is careful, and understands the risks, implications, and related processes - renaming/reorganising ones picture folders within Windows CAN be done safely, quickly, and successfully.

Being an amateur photographer from an IT background, using Windows to manage files/folders is second-nature to me, so I am much more comfortable using File Manager/Windows Explorer to manage by file/folder organisation than Lightroom.....so that's what I have done and continue to do, without a problem (yet!).

I can imagine the frustration, however, if you incredibly helpful people keep coming up against the same problems over and over again.

But am definitely with you on renaming.....I do ALL of that within Lightroom - before I take the next backup of both LR catalog AND Pictures folders!!!

My comment about "stop doing that" isn't because its dangerous if you are experienced enough to know what you are doing. It's because the person is a beginner at Lightroom and needs to understand how things work, so he won't get into these situations where his data disappears. Furthermore, if you read these forums, you will see that this is a very very common problem, and very much unlike "crossing the street".

Further, I honestly think that in the case of Lightroom, your IT background is leading down the wrong path. Moving files and folders, renaming files and folders, as I have written many times, is not an efficient way to manage your photos. Using keywords, and not file names and folders to organize things is much more powerful, in my opinion. Lightroom gives you more powerful tools than folders and file names, so why use inefficient tools (files/folders) when you can use more powerful tools (Lightroom keywords and metadata and collections)? I never move my photos, I never rename my photos (even in Lightroom), and I recommend you never do this either. I can find my photos very quickly, and I might add, more quickly than I could do had I used folders and file names to keep things organized. I believe the same is true for anyone, that Lightroom will give you a better and more powerful organization than anything you can do with operating system tools.

Imagine, using your IT background, that now you have this powerful database, with powerful search capabilities, and now you can organize things in ways that are not limited to having a document (photo) in a single folder, but it can be described in many different ways in the database, and that further this database could search extremely quickly on multiple criteria that you specify. Imagine that! That's what Lightroom is, and you can use its power, or not.

Hi,
Thanks for the response (and the telling off! :)), and I do take your point that an IT background is not always helpful.
Seriously, I do understand the frustration when you see the same problem cropping up time and time again. In my defense I was just trying to say that using Windows to do some file/folder organisation is not always wrong....with a caveat of ‘providing you know what you are doing’. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t spend all day reorganising my pictures folders in Windows.....it is in fact a very rare thing, though there have been times when it became necessary. It MAY have been easier to do it within LR, though I’m not sure about that.
FWIW, I am gradually using the LR facilities more and more....I do use folders and collections extensively, though keywords less so (but I’m working on it!). Next on the things to look at is my import process, as I know that I could be more efficient with that.
The thing is, efficiency isn’t necessarily the holy grail for everyone. One thing I have learnt, based on many years of bailing out friends and neighbours with their PC problems, is that there is often not a ‘right or wrong’ way of doing things....if a particular way of doing things works, it’s not always necessary to find a ‘better’ way of doing it. But if it keeps leading into trouble, agree that change is indicated! Now if I could just get my wife to understand that...... :)
Having said that, remember that I am not a professional photographer, merely an enthusiastic amateur....I don’t have a photo collection running into the tens of thousands to ‘organise’, so there isn’t always the motivation to keep finding more efficient ways of doing things. Comfort zones and all that, we nearly all have them. But I don’t mind being challenged about them.....

If efficiency isn't your goal, then so be it. Your method works for you, and very similar methods work for others. I have spoken to many many users (of Lightroom, and of Photoshop Elements) who are tickled pink to be able to manage their folders in Lightroom or PSE. The thought of more power doesn't resonate with them.

Nevertheless, the forums here aren't just about the individuals who write the posts. I want others who read these messages, but maybe don't post, to realize that there is an alternative to organizing via folders, an alternative that I like a lot, an alternative that I think lets you spend less time organizing your photos so you can spend more time enjoying your photos.

Good luck with your photography hobby!

Chill all........ :)

Jim, welcome to the forum! It could be as simple as Windows changed the drive letter of the external drive. It's not unusual.

And TNG, if I haven't said it before, welcome to you too. FWIW, I'd agree that using folders for some purposes and moving files using the OS are not inherently wrong, and actually your crossing the street example isn't far off either.... perhaps it should be more along the lines of 'stop until someone can show you the dangers and the safe way to do so when you need to...'.

Hi Victoria,

Thanks for the welcome, and for your comments.

I am chilled.....well, mostly! :)

Hey Mark....do you actually get many heated debates over here? I've been looking around the site for a few days and whilst I can see many strongly held and opposing views on certain topics (Automatic XMP or not, DNG versus RAW, backup systems, etc), everyone generally seems very calm and polite even when disagreeing. Makes a refreshing change from most sports forums!

Great place, but will have to be careful as I'll end up spending more time here that I can afford!! :)

Yes everyone round here is extremely polite, patient and respectful of the opinion of others. I think that helps to have a proper exchange of views.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Traced the problem to somehow connecting to a new more recent but incorrect *.lrcat. Have found the correct catalogue and all previous folders, keywords & metadata recovered. Now I have to do some reading and figure out how to correctly transfer to my master *.lrcat the photos that are in this other incorrect *.lrcat and then delete the incorrect *.lrcat. Would someone please direct me to a good source to read about this. Once again thanks

The function you're looking for is 'Import from Catalog....' Perhaps others will have some specific advice on tutorials, but it should be google-able. (is that a word?)

Google-able.... yes, it's a proper word now because 2 of us have used it and I've added it to my spellcheck! :D

Jim, did Brad's clue on Import from Catalog get you started, or do you need a hand with that?
