Lose enter signs?

Hi
I have been attempting to put a slide show together, and every time I enter text via the ABC function, if not happy with the text I can clear the text but an empty sign appears, how do I lose these "empty signs".

Dave,

simply click on the box and press Delete/Backspace key. You dont have to clear the text box first either.
