Hi, I'm struggling with my key wording strategy :
1) I would like to be able to share key words lists with friends.Where is it located in Lightroom 2 ? Is it possible to combine 2 lists ?
2) I've tried to use key words presets from Matt Kloskowski copying them in the proper folder: C\Document and Settings\user's name\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Keyword presets
It doesn't work. Where am I wrong ?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Haddok, welcome to the forum!

Easy options:

1. Go to Metadata menu > Import Keywords to import a list of keywords as a text file. That works great for the first time, but if you do it too often you can end up with a tangle of keywords.

2. Assign all of the keywords to one dummy image that you don't use for anything else (a plain grey file works great!) and then import that photo into each catalog. If you use Metadata menu > Write Metadata to File to write any changes you make in LR back to that file, and Metadata menu > Read Metadata from Files to bring in any changes made to that file elsewhere, it works quite nicely.

With regard to Matt's presets, can you point us to the webpage, and we'll see where it's going wrong. I have a feeling those aren't long lists of keywords, just some shortcuts.

Haddok, Welcome. Just to expand a little on Victoria's #1 above, that function works both ways. You can 'Import' your keywords from a properly formatted text file, or you can 'Export' your keywords to a formatted text file. When you say 'share lists with friends', it's not clear which direction you intended the flow to go, 'to the friends', or 'from the friends'.

To understand the proper import format, simply export your keywords to a text file, and have a look at it. Beware, extra blank lines, and white space, can cause the
import to fail.

Victoria's suggestion in #2 is an excellent way of sharing keywords. (I believe she was one of the very first to uncover that easy method.)

Thank you so much Victoria and Brad for your very efficient help. I haven't had time yet to try those two methods even with the extra time I had between Victoria answer and now due to the jet lag between our two places.
I'll try them as soon as possible and report.
As for the keywords presets Matt Kloskowski put on the net, they are in Lightroom Killer tips at http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/2''8/presets-keyword-sets/
In fact I edited one preset myself and tried to copy it on an other catalog where presets were on the same folder as the catalog and I failed having it show...
My intention through this process is to see how other people organise and hierarchie (?) their key words... The ultimate thing would them be to share a quite extensive key word list...
Thanks again.

I'm not sure I'd want to share keyword lists personally.... I'd end up with a load of keywords for things I'd never use. It's certainly worth looking at further though.

I see what you mean, but there still is the possibility in the Metadata menu to delete from the list all key words not used and purge it...
I belong to a photo club and we share very often a lot of subjects like Nature, Human or Sport photography, etc.... We might well be interested to share subjects lists. They are very easy to trim as text file as you indicated me and then import them at people's convenience.
It saves so much time when Key wording to use a hierarchised list that it's worth trying to built a very extensive one for each of those subjects..
I'll work on it and keep the forum informed ...All the best and thanks for your help.
