Anybody know what algorithm is used for local sharpening? Is it the same algorithm used for global sharpening? It seems like a non-masked, low-radius, high-detail kinda sharpening, but more insight would be good for me. - Thanks, Rob.

Don't know much about the math of the 'sharpen' + side of the algorithm, it just seems to work naturally for me. But if you locally sharpen below -5', you can begin to fake a lens blur. Or layer a couple of -1'' sharpen brush adjustments to really push it. You need the 3beta2, and you have to be in Process Version 2'1'.

Yes, it's the same algorithm. The local adjustment mirrors the Amount slider. So the other Sharpening sliders affect sharpening across the whole image, and with local adjustments you can vary the amount of sharpening for different areas of the image.
- I was more interested in its relationship to the global sharpening. - I wasn't very clear...
- Yes, the negative sharpening is almost as good as local lum. noise reduction - thanks, and the stacking of the pins is a hot tip - thanks, again.

Mark - Are you saying that the radius and detail of the local sharpener are the same as whats set on the global sharpener? And, masking too, I suppose? I once concluded otherwise, but I may have been "stoned", so to speak - have to re-check...

Yes, that's my understanding. I'm less certain about masking and haven't tested it -- arguably you can "mask" yourself in local adjustments by just applying the local adjustment to the area you want, so perhaps masking doesn't apply to local adjustments.

Just re-checked - indeed the local amount slider acts as an amount offset to the global sharpening settings, including masking. Thus, tweaking the global detail, radius, & mask settings will affect all local sharpening pins as well. I was definitely "stoned" (so to speak) first time I checked this and concluded otherwise.
