Local Adjustment brush and the color palette... making me use colorful language

Hi,

One of the wonderful features of LR which makes life so mush easier is the local adjustment brush... except I seem to be having trouble using it and not screwing up the color of things I have adjusted!

A number of times I have adjsuted the exposure of a local area thinking that all I was doing was burning or dodging an area and lo and behold the area's color had changed.... I soon realized that the little color box had a close resemblance to the color cast on the area I had just adjsuted... so I tried to use the color pallete to adjust the color of the adjusted area and for some reason I can't figure out how to do it.

What might I be doing wrong?

Do you open the pallete and THEN click on the dropper and move it to the desired area...?

How do you make sure that no color adjustments are being made to an area that is being adjusted?

Not sure if I'm understanding your question properly -- if you're simply trying to use the adjustment brush to adjust exposure only, simple: you have to make sure that when you activate the adjustment brush, that exposure is the only adjustment that's active. You should see something at the top of the adjustment brush options pane that says "effect: exposure" with a drop-down list. It's possible to have multiple effects selected simultaneously (like color for example), in which case the drop down option will say "custom". If that's the case just go to the drop down list and select exposure, it will reset every thing else.

If the only color adjustments you really want to make are to correct the inadvertent ones, probably easier to delete that adjustment (click on the adjustment push-pin and hit delete), and start over. On the other hand, if you intend to make some color adjustments, here's a pretty good tutorial on that subject:

Also, to make sure you have noe color adjustment, you can open the color palette and drag it all the way to the bottom where it's white.
