In the situation where I have imported dngs (2'MB each) and had set render 1:1 previews, later when viewing these files, if I view them singly with shift-tab to clear the panels, it loads for 3'-45 sec per file. Also, when viewing at 1:1 with in any screen mode, also 3'-45 sec. loading. Is this normal? Why is there such a long load when I have already rendered them 1:1 on import?

I have read it and deleted the preference file, but same behavior. In 1:1 or shift-tab only, it takes about 2' seconds with the loading message for any image that is being loaded for the first time. After that initial loading, it doesn't seem to happen again. You can now use arrow keys to go from image to image. Anyone have any suggestions?
Again: program is on boot, catalog is on external 75' gb firewire 8'' drive, cache is on partition of 1.5tb striped firewire 8'' and images on the other partition.

How much later were you viewing the files - and what 'discard 1:1 previews' setting do you have set in Catalog SEttings?

Oh, ok, I was just wondering whether the 1:1 previews that you'd rendered had been discarded.

When it says 'Loading' as opposed to 'Rendering 1:1 Preview' or 'Rendering Larger Preview', it's actually loading the preview from the hard drive, so that's down to disc read/write speed. If you don't actually need to zoom in on every image, you can make that faster by just rendering standard sized previews - which are smaller on disc and therefore quicker to read. You may also find that putting the catalog/previews on an internal drive would help somewhat.

I thought that it would be more efficient and faster performance if I separated all the elements. If I put the 1:1 previews on the internal, it will be on the drive with the application. I will try it out anyway and see what happens.
Boot: LR app and 1:1 previews
1tb ext drive: cache
1.5tb ext drive: image files
BTW. When I set up like this, I cannot work offline, must switch on ext chassis.
I'll let you know the results

The theory of speed increases from separating elements only really holds true when working on internal drives - once you add externals into the equation, unless they're esata, then you are potentially adding a slowdown into the mix. Your FW8'' is a good bet if you have to use externals, but it might be a bit of trial and error to work out the best configuration. LR app and catalog/previews on the same drive won't be a huge issue. You might also find throwing the ACR cache back onto the same internal drive is better than having it on the external, particularly when working in Develop module. See how it works.
