When adding keywords, is there anyway to link the structure so that by selecting the lowest level keyword from the keyword list, that the higher level keywords will automaticly be added to the keyword tags also? eq. :

Wildlife
>Birds
>>Kansas Birds
>>>Blackbirds_Orioles
>>>>Meadowlark
>>>>Cowbird
>>>>Oriole

I would like to be able to select "Oriole" from the list and have the upper 4 levels of the list added to the tags also?

Thanks

jim

In a nested Hierarchial Keyword list, when a keyword is created or edited, there is a checkbox "Export Containing Keywords". If this is checked on the parent (Birds) and children (Kansas Birds, etc.) and the lowest keyword (Oriole) then checking "Oriole" will cause all the parents back to "Birds" to be included in the Keyword field of the metadata.

Thanks Cletus, I have my structure set up as you've noted.

I've been working with this more and am still not seeing what I expected. I need to clarify my question.

Under the Keyword Tags box in the right column, there are 2 choices in the drop down box. 1) Enter Keywords and 2) Keywords & Containing keywords Will Export. If 2) is selected, then the field goes dark gray, (data cannot be entered) and when a bottom level keyword (Oriole) is selected from the keyword list all the upper level Hierarchial keywords show up.

When 1) is selected, the field is white and allows direct entry of keywords or entry by selection from the key word list (selecting the check box). By doing the latter, the only word that shows up in the Keyword Tag field is the actual selected keyword itself (Oriole), with no parents.

At this point, since only the lowest level keyword shows up in the tag field, does that mean that it is the only one one applied to that image for internal searching by LR2?

I'm unsure what the 2) selection keyword tag drop down box does. Since all the decending parents show up (but are in a gray field), does that mean that they are applied to the image as it exists in LR2 (and thus searchable) or does that mean that they will only be applied to the metadata if the image is exported (meaning not searchable from within LR2)?

I'm still not sure I've explained this correctly. What I am after, is to be able to select only the lowest level word in the nested hierarchy and have all the above words (parents) be applied also, and show up in the tag field and be searchable through LR2.

Thanks

The 'Will Export' view option, '2)' you called it, shows you exactly what you're asking about. It answers the question, "If I export this image, what keywords will be embedded?' This also implies the answer to 'What keywords are attached to this image, both directly, and by hierarchal inference?'

There's no harm in leaving 2) enabled all the time, if you're comfortable with it. Some people get confused, and prefer just to see the root keyword, without its parent categories.

As Cletus explained, if you set up the Keyword Tag Options correctly (and that's how they set by default) all the parent keywords of all levels will be attached to the image.

Thanks
