Hello,

Light has been starting to slow down recently. Only about 2 weeks abo it was using 5''mb of memory and now its using 1.6gb of mem, why would there be a massige jump. Is there anything i can do to speed it up other than buying more memory?

Cheers
Mark

What version of Lightroom? What operating system? What are you doing when the memory usage is high? Are you doing a complicated edit of a photo that includes several adjustment brushes or graduated filters? Is the photo extremely large (what are the dimensions)? Does it do this on every photo or just some? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi Tim, welcome to the forum!

There was a memory leak in 2.2 - update to 2.3 and you should be sorted.

Hi,

I'm opperating 2.3, running vista prem 64bit, Intel2duo 85''.
I'm editing my photos prom holiday, which were taken on my 5'd and 5d and all RAW files, there are about 5'' in total, and when i noticed how much mem it was using i was about 3/4's completed editing all the images.

Cheers

You didn't answer most of my questions. So I repeat: "What are you doing when the memory usage is high? Are you doing a complicated edit of a photo that includes several adjustment brushes or graduated filters? Is the photo extremely large (what are the dimensions)? Does it do this on every photo or just some?"

Hi,

I'm not a home so i can't tell you the excact size. Google is telling me the RAW file size of a 5'd is 18mb 4752 x 3168 pixels. When i noticed that i was using so much memory i was only adusting the image sliders so no brushes or grad's ( although on other images in the same folder i have used those tools. I haven't check if it does it on every image but i will do a few tests tonight. cheers

Clearly, working on an 18mb image is going to take more memory than a 1'mb image. Whether or not there are other problems here is hard to say at this time.

One way to see if you are using too much memory is activate task manager> performance> 2 boxes on the left side; the top one is CPU usage and the bottom is Memory.
For my computer, the bottom box says 1.33GB of memory used so I am way under the max of 4GB(3.5GB is more realistic number). I do not recall what your RAM is on your computer. Just compare the numbers. You have mentioned that you are running vista 64 bit that is nice because you can add more RAM if you need it. In my case, I have 32 bit so I am already maxed out on RAM. I can physically add RAM(have empty slots) but my system will not utilize it.

As for the overall question on the thread, I've also noticed that if at any point you were using the adjustment brush AND you have the "auto mask" turned on, it can really bog down the machine too. Sometimes to the point where after I'm done "painting" and area and move my mouse to select a different slider, it doesn't realize I'm no longer holding down the mouse button and will draw a streak across my photo with the adjustment brush.

And I've also noticed that when this happens, LR2 takes a while to "recover" even after I turn off the adjustment brush option. So if some heavy editing was being done with the brush with auto mask turned on, it might be that it was still trying to clear out the memory used?? Maybe??

I've got the same problem and just assumed it's my slow PC - a Dell 915', 3.'Mhz Core Dual, 2x1gig DDR2 4''Mhz mem. But having stumbled across this forum and reading a few threads, perhaps it's not my slow PC but something software wise?

I've been 'watching' my mem use thinking i could do with 4gig but i can see that i often still have 1gig UNUSED physical space. I'm sure 2 extra gig will help but don't think that's the issue. Instead, I've noticed my processor use peaking quiet a lot quiet often..then i get LR2 freezing or lagging behind what i'm trying to do e.g. moving sliders. I'm using LR 2.3.

I'm new to the forum so if this has been discussed before/elsewhere, pls point me right direction. Keen to fix this without resorting to buying new pc. more mem is ok though. they're cheap now.

boy_lah, Welcome to the forums.
Some random stuff to think about:
1) 32bit windows can't use more than 2GB of memory, although there is a setup tweak to get it to use 3GB, 'sort of'. Adding memory to this configuration won't help.

2) Are you running any realtime antivirus? If so, exclude all of Lr and your image files from scanning.

3) Are you running nVidia graphics? There are known issues with some vintages of the nView desktop software, and certain hardware acceleration settings.

4) What kind of image files? The bigger the files, the worse the performance. Lots of complaints about Canon 5D2 fullrez raws.

5) Lots of folks report acceptable performance with eqpt in your range, so .....

6) Here's a blog post on helping with performance issues in general, by our own Victoria B.

hi brad,

Thanks for your tips.

1) hmm...i knew XP doesn't use more than 3.5gig mems but i didn't realise you need to 'tweak' it and i thought it the max was 3.5gigs not just 3? what tweak are we talking about here? I'm using XP SP3 32bit. 2x1gig mem is cheap but won't buy if not useful.

2) yes, i'm running nvdia and having found another thread and turning off a setting - things have sped along nicely!! this solved a lot of the slider sluggishness i've had

3) my RAW are between 1'-12megs whilst my TIFFs can be up to 25megs. 5Dmk2 'may' be on the horizon in the future but suspect i'll need a new pc to handle 21megs RAW.

4) my PC's chip is the older Core Dual not the newer Core 2 Duo but it's twin core nonetheless.

5) thanks for the link - will digest.

This forum is great!

Read this thread, particularly Adobe's Melissa Gaul's post about a dozen posts down, and the link she includes.
