Lightroom Update problem

I posted this on the NAPP forum several hours ago, but have not received any answers yet so I thought I would try here.

It finally happened - my first Lightroom installation error.

I downloaded and installed the LR 2.2 update, hoping to successfully update my LR 2.1 installation. Everything appeared to be going well - the installer did its thing, and reported a successful update. When opening, the splash screen displays Version 2.2.

However, I then receive an error message: "An error occurred when attempting to change modules." The LR screen itself is completely blank.

I had been using LR successfully just prior to running the update, and the only thing I did was to quit LR 2.1 just prior to updating.

I have an Intel Mac Pro tower, OS 1'.5.6, 5GB of RAM, and I am opening LR in 64 bit mode.

A few minutes ago I successfully updated my other copy, on a PowerPC G5 iMac running Mac OS 1'.4.11. No problems whatsoever!

Does it sound like my problem might be unique to a 64 bit installation on an Intel machine? The catalog on my Intel machine is right where it always has been, on ~/Users/**(me)**/Pictures/Lightroom, and is labeled Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat, and is 58.7 MB.

Any ideas?

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum!

That message is, more often than not, a catalog issue. Try holding down Opt while opening LR and let it start a new catalog, and see if that'll open.

Also try deleting/moving the prefs file - that solves weird problems.

Great suggestions, but no changes. I still get the same stubborn error message, and LR remains blank. I tried double-clicking the catalog on the catalog itself which causes LR to open but still the same result. I also tried opening LR in 32-bit mode, again with the same results.

I tried doing the installation over again, ... with the same results.

I can choose a second display ( 1/2 selection boxes in lower left corner ) and can see thumbnails of all my photos, but cannot get them loaded into LR. There are only 4'18 photos taking up 58.7 MB, so it should be a piece of cake! And, checking the information for the file shows that it should open with "Adobe Lightroom 2 (default) (Adobe Lightroom 2.2)" which is what it should be.

I recently upgraded to OS 1'.5.6 - wonder if that could be a clue ...

So is it all modules that it won't let you into? Or just certain modules? Only other thing I'd try is a fresh user account (without moving everything else over!!!), and see if it'll run.

It will not allow me to access any modules. I tried to open an earlier one that had been in existence before I moved from LR 1.4 to LR 2.', and it gave me an upgrade request message. So I allowed it to do its thing and it upgraded the older catalog to a new Lightroom 2 Catalog-2.lrcat file. However, it then gave me the same old error message.

I'm not sure what to do about a fresh user account, but that reminded me that I have not restarted my computer since this whole fiasco began this morning. In desperation, I will do that. Unfortunately, I'm running out of time. I have an orchestra rehearsal tonight (musicians are always busy at Christmas, even amateurs like me!) and have been helping my wife get ready for Christmas and for company arriving on Friday.

Greetings,

Still no progress, and in viewing other forums it seems that many others have the same problem.

Can someone give me the recommended procedure for removing Version 2.2, and downgrading back to Version 2.1 ? Right now I'm dead in the water, and I need to do some editing in the next few days.

Delete the app, and on a Mac, the key to being able to reinstall is usually to simply delete the receipt package from [systemdrive]/Library/Receipts/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.pkg, then you can just reinstall 2.1 as normal.

Thanks for all of the help!

I now am back to LR 2.1 on my Intel MacPro, although I still am able to use LR 2.2 on my G5 iMac.

This exercise has been a real pain - hopefully a solution will become obvious real soon!

In a weird kind of way, it's actually useful that a large number of people have reported the same bug, because then it's easier for them to track down and fix.
