Lightroom to Photoshop - Colour space problems

I'm having problems editing photos in photoshop from lightroom. When I send a photo to Photoshop using the 'edit in' function in Lightroom, set to prophoto RGB, the colours don't show properly in photoshop. This is the case whether I have photoshop set to the prophoto colour space, or if I just click to say use embedded colour profile.

Exporting from Lightroom in srgb or adobe rgb works fine, but it seems best to stick to prophoto for things that are only going to Photoshop and straight back into Lightroom, only converting to srgb later for print or web.

Any ideas why Photoshop isn't liking prophoto?

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum!

How differently are we talking? What happens if you export to prophoto and open it that way?

Check the details here and here to confirm that you're set up correctly, and if that's all straight, we'll see what else could be going on.

It would also be useful to know system specs - most put them in their signature (under User CP on the menu bar above) so they don't have to keep repeating them.

I've checked my monitor profile and the other settings, everything looks okay. I tried exporting a photo in prophoto and the result was the same. In Photoshop it looks unsaturated with a green/brownish tint, like in your example.

Also, I find that this photo views incorrectly in Picasa (as you might expect for prophoto), but views correctly in Windows Picture Viewer. I already tried a re-install of Photoshop as well.

Also! How does the 'edit in' colour space setting work with jpegs, which already are in srgb from the camera? From my understanding, Lightroom inherently works in prophoto, and using the edit in function should then override the inherent srgb, and convert to whichever colour space it is set to. At the moment, I am finding that my jpegs with 'edit in' set to adobe rgb show incorrect too. It's as if Lightroom is assigning the colour profiles but not converting to them properly.


I'm on a 2.4ghz core2duo machine, 3gb ram, windows XP.

Windows Picture Viewer shouldn't be showing the image correctly. That in itself is a bit weird.

Can you do a screenshot showing LR's develop module including the histogram, and the same image in PS too?

Nice flower, but yeah, I see the problem! Ok, it's unlikely to be a corrupted monitor profile, since the histogram looks the right colour.

And you said exporting to sRGB and AdobeRGB are fine but exporting to ProPhotoRGB looks odd, correct?

What happens if you change the Edit in... preference to sRGB or AdobeRGB? Does that work correctly? If it does, I'd suspect a corrupted ProPhotoRGB profile - perhaps copy it off the PS DVD again...?

Well I think I might have gotten to the root of the problem. I'm using CS4 with the GPU acceleration turned on. In the advanced openGL settings dialog there is a tick box for colour matching, which sorts things. Still a bit perturbed as to why a prophoto image views okay in windows picture viewer which I don't think should be colour managed, but I guess we'll let sleeping dogs lie!

Still getting used to Lightroom, but it keeps getting better and better. This'll help streamline things even more now.

I have the same problem as "mikeru" but the dialog box, which should solve the problem, is not active. View attachment 711

The problem started after the install of CS4, so this could be the solution, but why is half of the window not "working"?

Please help!

Welcome to the forums Christoffer! I don't have CS4 but I am sure you are not looking at the right dialog box to setup color management.
