lightroom stops working

pls can anyone help, when I open lightroom and navigate around in the library module, it constantly stops working and closes, sometimes will work after restarting lightroom 3 times. also sometimes lightroom starts and no keywords are visible. using lightroom 2.3 with vista business and wd external hard drive, seems like when I import new photos the problem gets worse each time. I'm not too computer savy, have no idea where to turn. any help would be greatly appreciated.
