lightroom quits

Hi, new to the forum and new to lightroom.
Downloaded the trial version 2.6 a few days ago and was working fine at first but then quit unexpectedly and did that every time after upon opening. Wasn't too worried because I was buying a new version so hoped that would be fine when installed. However having done that, downloaded lightroom 2.6 and entered the serial code, I still have exactly the same problem everytime I try to open it. Help please!

Welcome to the forum and welcome to LR :)

Try renaming your catalog file (e.g. xxx.lrcat) to something else (e.g. xxx.lrcat.old) and start LR. This will create a new catalog, which might work.

If not, try renaming the Lightroom Preference file (on a WinXP System "Documents and Settings/[username]/Application Data/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences/Lightroom 2 Preferences.agprefs" to an .old extension and restart LR.
This will create a new set of preferences.

Thank you! Sorry I didn't reply sooner I only just realised a reply had been posted!

Deleting the preference files worked in the end and I have been very happily using lightroom for the last month. Unfortunately as of last week new problem! All works fine until I try and enter the print module then lightroom quits again with the same error message as previously. I had been using the print module before so this is new problem.

I've tried:
Checking preference files are all gone
Creating new catalogue - same thing happens
restarting/logging off

I really need to print out some artwork and don't know what else to try! Please help!

oh no now I'm back to lightroom quitting as soon as i open the application!!!!
I'm at my wits end - this is my only photo software package and is essential for editing my artwork!

Please somebody help!

Complaining about the print module is usually due to a corrupted print template. I'd try moving them out of the way to see if that allows it to open and switch modules ok. You'll find them in the Users/[your user]/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom folder.

Hi Victoria - thank you so much for your reply!
Now I may be missing something really obvious so I apologise in advance but when I go into the Adobe folder (via library and application support as you said) the only folder that is within it is one called AIR (which has a folder called updater within it which has 2 pingback files within that). There is no lightroom folder there although it is still showing in applications and launches but then quits straight away.

Have you gone through the main MacHD/Library or through the MacHD/Users/user account/Library? You want the user one.

The lack of that folder could be the issue. Perhaps you've deleted it somewhere along the lines in your investigations? Maybe try reinstalling?

ok I dragged the lightroom application to the trash and then downloaded version 2.6 again which turned up in applications when I installed it but the same problem still happens. When I downloaded it this time it didn't ask for the serial number on my disk packet - does that mean the uninstall didn't properly take place?

Chantal, just try something for me - start a clean user account and install it there, and see if that does the trick. If it does, we can sort it further.

right managed to do that eventually and yes it opens fine! So where do I go next?

It may be a problem with folder/file permissions on your original user account that stops the installation from completing correctly although I would normally expect to see an error during the installation process (but not always). It seems odd that you had no Lightroom folder in your original users library so this is why I think this could be the issue.

I would try running the repair permissions utility from the Disk Utility to see if this helps. Then you could try the installation again under the original user. I'm not sure if it covers user account folders but it can't do any harm to try. If this doesn't help then you could compare the permissions on the folders of the new account and the original. We can help you do this :)

Or you can just copy the files back from the new user account to your normal user account. No one yet has been able to tell me exactly which files it is that works, but the ones you want likely to include are:

MacHD/Users/[newuseraccount]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
MacHD/Users/[newuseraccount]/Library/Preferences/ any Lightroom .plist files

and just put them in the equivalent position within your normal user account.

I don't know why, but it seems to work every time.

Hey Victoria - not completely there but definite progress!
After a fair bit of faffing copied the files across as you said. Can now open lightroom in my normal user again - hurrah!! If I create a new catalogue I can also use the print module - double hurrah! But if if I try to use it in the catalogue that has all my images in then it still crashes at this point.

Hey, that is progress!

Ok, sounds like you might have a corrupted catalog there. Do you have a recent backup?

Possibly. Try double-clicking on one of the backups (or a duplicate of one of the backups!) to see if that opens ok.

Stick with Victoria's instructions for now as we don't want to confuse matters.

I would do this anyway as it is a common maintenance tip in OSX. It may not help you current situation as it depends on the package installer type that Adobe use but it won't hurt it.

Victoria - for a brief moment yesturday I when I opened it from the catalogue instead of via applications - it both opened AND let me go to the print module!
But then went back to quitting as soon as I try to start lightroom - regardless of where I try to open it from! Sigh.
