Lightroom Packaging for Distribution

Starting with release 2.2 and continuing with 2.3, Adobe has packaged BOTH the 32 and 64 bit Windows versions of Lightroom in the same down load. The package is now over 135 MBytes.

Not everyone in America has access to 3 Mb/s internet access. In our rural area, we consider ourselves lucky (relative to other rural areas) to have service that operates at 3'' kb/s. At these speeds, my download of 2.3 took well over an hour this morning.

Adobe needs to think more about its customers when it packages Lightroom for distribution. The single package is convenient for Adobe - not clear it is convenient for any of Adobe's customers. Adobe needs to return to the packaging strategy it used at release 2.1 and earlier - a single version in each down-loadable package.

I've heard a few people say that. By all means put your request in direct to Adobe - all requests on this form are read by those in charge - Official Feature Request/Bug Report Form

I've seen this discussed previously by various Adobe contributors/team members.

Not defending, just explaining.
The problems are these: the installation program has to function as a first time install, as an upgrade install, from a CD, and from a web delivery system (to which you referred.) As some of this functionality is provided/managed by different business units at Adobe this adds a great deal of complexity to the delivered product, all of which has to be 'Quality Engineered', leading to fewer features, and longer version turn around times.

I understand your pain, and trust me, the development team does too. As with many other things, it's a matter of priorities.

The only way we know of to make your feelings known is to submit a feature request directly to Adobe. There's a link for that on the toobar at the top of the thread. We operate on the theory that the 'squeakiest wheels' get the grease.

Folks -- Thanks for your comments. I have also left this as a feature request at Adobe's site. In a past life, I ran software operations at one of the major telecomm equipment vendors; the cost of providing separate packages for distribution really is not large. One just needs to think about the customer experience. Frank
