I'm having trouble with synching metadata. First I should mention that I save ll metadata to XMP side car files. I change a caption in Lightroom and the catalog shows the new caption just fine. I then select Save Metadata to file. I then open that same file up in Photoshop and it is there as I expect. I take the same file to Photo Mechanic and the old caption shows up. Nothing I do in Lightroom will put the new caption in the XMP file. If I go from Adobe product to Adobe product there's no issues. But take the file to a nonadobe program and the changes don's show up. Does anyone have any idea what I may be doing wrong? I should mention that Photo Mechanic is set to read XMP files and it is doing that since it's reading the original XMP caption I had in the image. Just won't see the new one.

Update to Not Synching Post

I should have mentioned that I'm runing Mac OSX 1'.5.5. Files are on external drives.

Jim:

Did you change the preferences in Photo Mechanic from the defaults? I ask, because it's usually set to read the IPTC before XMP. So it's possible, if the file was ever touched by Photo Mechanic or iView/Expression media (which also writes to the IPTC in the file header of the RAW file), that Photo Mechanic is seeing that entry rather than the one stored in XMP.

If you are working back and forth with Photo Mechanic and Adobe products, I'd recommend changing the preferences in Photo Mechanic to those more suitable for an adobe workflow.

Try that and see if it takes care of the problem.

Good advice, David. Welcome to our forum.

FOr future reference could you fill in your SIgnature with basic info as others have done. You will find the means under User CP in the Navebar top of the forum.

Don:

I stumbled into the forum following a google alert about photo metadata. As a result, I got the message about adding a signature line after I had already posted. I did add that afterwards, so future posts should have that info, and if working correctly should show up after this post.
