Lightroom (Not Responding)

Hello,

Its been a while since Ive been here, let alone posted here. Well, I have this issue with lightroom now. I am using lightroom version 1.3.1 on a vista run laptop.

Well, whenever I browse to "computer" via the export function or when remapping "lost files" because I moved them to an external hard drive, lightroom gets "hung up" and wont function. I have to exit out of lightroom through the "x" and it says. Close program or wait for lightrooom to respond.

Not sure what the deal is. This just recently started happening. The external HD is a 5''gig drive with about 9'gigs of free space left.

Anyone have any ideas as the root of this evil? Thanks.

Jason, I had symptoms like that when I had a hard-drive starting to go bad.
If you're reasonably satisfied that your drives are OK, you might want to try defaulting your preferences file.

Look for Lightroom Preferences.agprefs in your ..../Application Data/....
directory. On Vista, it's something like [username]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Lightroom/Preferences/Lightroom Preferences.agprefs.

Don't delete it, just rename it something like LRprefs.bak, so you can retrieve it if that's not the problem. (That directory tree might be <hidden>, you can enable viewing hidden files/folders in Control Panel > Folder Options > View)

If I rename that to a backup file, will lightroom automatically create a new one when I open it. How will that effect whats already there, or am I going to have to reset all my current preferences?

Really? HD going bad? The thing is only like 8 months old and has 1''gigs of free space out of 5''.

All my old photo folders and a lot of movies are on that drive. After I process them, I move them to the external drive. How can I find out if its going bad? I have backups on a lot of the folders, but havent on some of the recent stuff i moved there.

I can browse there through windows explorer with no problems or hang-ups. Or when saving or exporting avi files there when I convert or combine. but thanks for the tip.

Yes, LR will create a new one, thereby losing your current settings. (That's why we're saving it, we can restore if that's not the problem)

[COLOR=#''''ff]I had a C:\ drive going bad. At first everything just sort of seemed slow, and I had particular problems with LR (even tho' all my catalogs and files were on other drives.) The absolute worst was PaintShopPro. Eventually everything got wonky, Outlook took forever to load, etc and I had to scrap the drive and reinstall XP, etc. So, I'm referring to ALL of your drives, not just the photo data drive.

Rebuilding the prefs file seems to solve a lot of problems. Perhaps it'll solve this one. If you save the original, absolutely no harm in trying.

Talked to the IT guy at my "normal job" and i forgot to mention above that alot of the "missing files" are mapped to the same file structure, but on an "E" drive, but presently this HD is setup to be the "G" drive. Told me I should change that and see if that affects anything as well.

Neither your solution, nor the fix that my IT guy gave me worked. the problem is still there!!

Any network drives on that system? I've seen other windows programs hang while trying to bring up the browse dialog when it was trying to find a network drive.

What happens if you detach the external drive and test working on the internal? It might narrow down the cause, and then we can find a solution.

Same problem when browing Computer under Vista

Hi All,

I have the same problem.

It occurs when I select the "Computer" item from the Browse for Files or Folders dialogue (when I select where to export a photo to, or where to backup the catalog to). Interestingly, the slightly different dialogue for, say, Open Catalog (which has a row of icons down its left hand side) does not exhibit the same problem.

Further, I did not have this problem prior to "upgrading" to Vista SP 1 earlier today, so presumably the problem is caused by some interaction between lightroom and Vista?

If someone does find a workaround, please let me know!

Same problem here

I've got the same problem. In the past it happened only occasionally, but now I can't export at all. Exporting hangs up and freezes when I try to assign a folder to export to. This happens at first click in the folder box. Any solutions would be much appreciated.
