Lightroom not remembering changes to preferences

Recently Lightroom asks me to update catalog everytime it starts. I went to preferences and said use a particular catalog. When I restart it says catalog not found and in preferences it has returned to "Use last catalog" Also when I unchecked the splash screen, when I start Lightroom the box is checked.

Oh we'll update that one, thanks. The same instructions apply, the filename's just changed slightly.
