lightroom is slow(import dialog)

hello,
I have two questions:
1. is there any way to MOVE my pics directly from the camera? I dont have an option to move pictures in import dialog, only to copy.


2. every time when I open import dialog and try to change the location where to import my pictures, lightroom starts to search for something on ALL my hard drive and it takes like 3'sec just to open the dialog. Actually it happens everywhere in lightroom, where "pick the location" dialog is required.

1. No, you can only copy. This is by design. Most photographers (and many computer users in general) don't trust a 'move' command. A move is a copy followed by a delete. What happens if the copy goes wrong, but the delete works fine? Admittedly, there are situations where a move makes sense, but most photogs would rather spend the time verifying the copy, making a backup (or two) and then deleting the source files, than explaining to the bride's mother why the pictures went in the bit bucket. (OK, I'm trying to be humorous, but that's why it's that way.)

2. You don't mention operating system, hard-drive arrangement or LR version. I'm guessing Windows, I had the same problem with Windows, sometime ago, and now I don't. I don't know what solved the problem, but in the meantime, I've continued to upgrade LR to the most recent versions, replaced a failing internal drive, and I've moved my LR catalogs to my fastest internal drive. One thing I notice, two of my external drives auto-sleep, and it takes them about 1' seconds to wake up.

Are you noticing the problem just in LR, or in other apps and the OS as well?

You could manually (or via a script) copy/move the files to their final resting place on your Hard drive, then do an import photos from disk and "leave in place". Though it sounds like you have other issues.

(If Windows) Is your indexing service turned on?

p4 2.8/2gb/windows xp/ lightroom 1.3 (with latest updates)
indexing is ON and sleep for hdds is not allowed

I have all my pictures on internal harddrive, but my catalog is on drive C (system drive).
I'm not sure if I need to move my catalog to the drive with pictures..

i dont have that problem in any other program

and about the copy/move issue. if most photographers do not trust in the move command they could just disable that option and use copy instead. I just want to have a choice. I guess when I loose all my pictures during the move, I will agree with Adobe

Probably best for performance if catalog and photos remain on separate drives. Most LR perfrrmance issues are related to disk i/o.
